Hermann Jacob Lasius
Hermann Jacob Lasius (born November 15, 1715 in Greifswald ; † August 4, 1803 in Rostock ) was a German classical philologist and pedagogue . He directed the city schools in Greifswald and Rostock.
Life
Hermann Jacob Lasius was the son of Johann Lorenz Lasius, teacher at the Greifswald city school , and Ilsabe Barner, daughter of a Greifswald merchant. After attending the city school, he studied from 1733 to 1738 at the University of Greifswald with Laurentius Stenzler , Peter Ahlwardt , Andreas Westphal , Michael Christian Rusmeyer , Jakob Heinrich von Balthasar , Nikolaus Köppen and Johann Lembke . In 1738 he went to the University of Jena to continue his studies . In the spring of 1740 he moved to the University of Halle , where he received his master's degree and doctorate in philosophy. He then completed his habilitation in Halle and gave lectures.
In 1742 he accepted a call to the University of Greifswald, where he also gave lectures. He became a member of the German Society of Greifswald . From the city council he was appointed vice rector in 1745 and rector of the city school in 1749. He also held lectures at the university, which wanted to appoint him professor of logic in 1752. However, the Swedish King Adolf Friedrich preferred Lasius' previous teacher Peter Ahlwardt. Therefore in 1764 he accepted a professorship in Greek literature at the University of Rostock . In 1771 he was also assigned the rectorate of the city school there by the city council of Rostock . In 1788 he let himself be exempted from running the school for health reasons, but continued teaching at the university until 1797. Between 1768 and 1792 he was elected rector of the university four times.
In the last years of his life he suffered from increasing visual impairment, which eventually led to almost complete blindness.
Hermann Jacob Lasius had married the eldest daughter of Greifswald's mayor Friedrich Detlof Wilde in 1750. The two had two sons and two daughters.
