Haiyang 2A is a Chinese earth observation satellite .

On August 15, 2011, at 22:57 UTC, it was launched into an approximately 1000 km high sun-synchronous orbit by a Long March 4B launcher from Launch Complex 1 of the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi Province .

It is the first of a fleet of four satellites designed to observe the dynamic oceanic environment as well as wind speeds, wave heights and water temperature. The new satellite will support the two satellites Haiyang 1A and 1B , launched in 2002 and 2007 .

Development of the satellites by Dongfanghong Satellite Corporation (DFH), a spin-off from the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), began in January 2007. Their mission is divided into two phases. In the first two years the railway will have a 14-day cycle. In the following year, a geodetic orbit with a 168-day cycle and a 5-day sub-cycle is to be taken. The satellites are equipped with the following microwave instruments for the measurements : with two radar altimeters working in Ku and C band , an imaging multi-channel microwave radiometer (microwave brightness temperature) and a radar scatterometer working in Ku band . In addition, the satellite carries the DORIS instrument (Determination Orbite Radiopositionnement Integres Satellite), a French position measuring device, GPS sensors and a laser reflector . The radiometer has a swath width of 1600 km and can determine wind speeds in the range from 7 to 50 m / s and an accuracy of 2 m / s and sea surface temperatures to an accuracy of 1 ° C. Equipped with a 1.4 m antenna, the radar altimeter with 20 watt transmission power can measure wave heights on the ocean in a range of 0.5 to 20 m and a resolution of 16 km. The scatterometer has a swath width of 1400 km, a transmission power of 110 watts, a 1.0 m antenna and, with a resolution of 25 km, can measure wind speeds between 2 and 24 m / s at 2 m / s and the wind direction at 20 ° measure accurately. The collected data is transmitted to the ground station in the X-band , while the satellite is controlled via a communication channel in the S-band .
