Planet Funk is an Italian dance and electro group. With the single Chase the Sun she achieved international fame in 2000/2001.

Band history

Planet Funk was formed in 1999 when the group Souled Out - consisting of the Neapolitan music producers Alessandro Sommella, Domenico "GG" Canu and Sergio Della Monica - joined forces with the Florentine duo Kamasutra - keyboardist Marco Baroni and DJ Alex Neri - to form a new formation. The name "Planet Funk" takes up the title of an earlier song by Alex Neri. With the singers Auli Kokko and Dan Black they recorded the song Chase the Sun for the summer of 2000 , which surprisingly became a hit on Ibiza and earned the group enough attention that David Boyd signed them to Virgin Records . The debut album Non Zero Sumness was released in 2002.

Planet Funk 2005 in Taranto

In the course of the following years, Planet Funk released further albums, such as The Illogical Consequence (2005) and Static (2006). In 2009 the first best of was released, preceded by the single Lemonade . The most recent album, The Great Shake , was released in 2011. Guests were repeatedly hired for individual tracks, including Jovanotti , Jim Kerr , Raiss , Sally Doherty , John Graham and Luke Allen . Planet Funk itself also worked for and with Simple Minds , New Order and Faithless . In 2011, the Luxembourg guitarist and singer Alex Uhlmann joined the group.

At the end of 2015, the single We-People was released , with which Planet Funk supports an international campaign initiated by Save the Children to reduce child mortality . A new album has been announced for 2016.

Trivia

The 2001 released hit single Chase the Sun is from Sky Sports for quite some time about transfers of PDC - darts played tournaments during set breaks and therefore has a high degree of recognition and cult status among darts fans. As a result, it has been increasingly played at other sporting events for a number of years and today, alongside Kernkraft 400, it is one of the best-known and most frequently played techno melodies at sporting events.

Scooter sampled the chorus melody from Chase the Sun on their 2009 single J'adore Hardcore . Kollegah did the same on his song Testament .
