Johann Hermann Becker (theologian)
Johann Hermann Becker , actually Hermann Becker (born December 10, 1700 in Rostock , † April 7, 1759 in Lübeck ) was a German Lutheran theologian .
Life
(Johann) Hermann Becker came from the Rostock family of scholars that went back to Hermann Becker . He was the son of Heinrich Becker (1662-1720) and his wife Christine Margarete, née Schomer. The mathematician and theologian Peter Becker was his uncle; Heinrich Becker his brother. Johann Hermann Becker studied at the University of Rostock and received his master's degree in 1721 . He then worked as a private lecturer. In 1734 he became archdeacon at the Marienkirche in Rostock. In 1744 he calculated a new calendar disc for the astronomical clock in St. Mary's Church, which was then in use from 1745 to 1877. In 1747 he received a chair for theology at the University of Greifswald , with which the office of pastor at the local St. Jacobi Church was connected. In the same year he became a doctor of theology doctorate . In 1749 he became assessor at the Greifswald consistory . In 1751 he went to Lübeck, where he was pastor at St. Mary's Church until the end of his life .
His first marriage from 1729 to Johanna Magdalena Möller (1707–1746) and his second marriage from 1747 to Gertrud Emerentia Engelbrecht († 1777). His son Heinrich Valentin Becker (1732–1796) was a theologian and mathematician. Other sons were Peter Hermann Becker and Johann Rudolph Becker .
Johann Henrich von Seelen and Balthasar Münter wrote him memorials.
His wooden epitaph on the north-west side of the second northern choir pillar of St. Mary's Church showed a rococo cartridge with a compact inscription between two mourning putti and his coat of arms underneath. It burned during the air raid on Lübeck on Palm Sunday 1942.
