The Bitburger Brewery Group is a German brewery group based in Bitburg in the Eifel . It emerged from the Bitburger brewery and is a sister company of the Bitburger Holding . The parent company for the Bitburger brewing group and the Bitburger Holding is Th. Simon GmbH & Co. KG, in which the Simon family has bundled their joint entrepreneurial activities.

history

The Bitburger brewery was founded in 1817 "in front of the Schaakentore" in Bitburg by the then 33-year-old brewer and landowner Johann Peter Wallenborn .

Since the beginning of the 1990s, the Bitburger brewery has expanded its product portfolio through acquisitions of other breweries. In 1991 Bitburger took over the Köstritzer black beer brewery in Thuringia, which was first mentioned in 1543 as the "Köstritzer Erbschänke". Despite its great tradition, the Köstritzer Schwarzbier had hardly any market significance until 1993 when Original Köstritzer Schwarzbier was launched nationwide. This established the black beer segment. In 2002 the Wernesgrüner brewery in Saxony was taken over. The Schorer brothers were given the right to brew and give gifts as early as 1436. In 2004 the König brewery in Duisburg (North Rhine-Westphalia) and the Licher private brewery in Hesse followed. The König brewery was founded in the rural community of Beeck in the Ruhr area in 1858 and the Licher private brewery in Lich in 1854.

The five brands Bitburger, König Pilsener, Köstritzer, Wernesgrüner and Licher have been operating under the umbrella of Bitburger Braugruppe GmbH since 2007.

In January 2014 the Federal Cartel Office imposed a fine of 106.5 million euros on the Bitburger Group and three other breweries for fixing prices for draft and bottled beers in a beer cartel from 2006 to 2008.

In August 2018, the Bitburger Brewery Group, together with the Krombacher Brewery and Coca-Cola European Partners Germany, founded the joint venture company Kollex for close cooperation in the field of digital services for the beverage wholesalers (GFGH) and the out-of-home market.

Brands and products

The brewing group includes the brands Bitburger, König, Köstritzer, Licher, Wernesgrüner as well as Königsbacher and Nette . In addition, there is a sales partnership with Benediktiner Weißbräu GmbH.
