history
On March 18, 1436, the Schorer brothers (members of the famous Schürer family of glassmakers ) received the right to set up a glassworks in the forest. As was customary for remote, commercial properties at the time and necessary for self-sufficiency, the glassworks privilege also included brewing and serving rights . The Schorersche Gut and the Gläsersche Estate, built in 1589, established the place Wernesgrün.
In 1762 the Günnel family acquired the Schorersche brewery. In 1774 the Mannel family took over the Gläsersche Gut. Up to the end of the 19th century there were still five independent breweries in Wernesgrün. The largest of these belonged to the Günnel and Männel families.
The Günnel family was expropriated in 1946, and in 1972 so was the Männel family. Both breweries merged in 1974 to form VEB Exportbierbrauerei Wernesgrün . After reunification , the company traded as Wernesgrüner Brauerei AG from 1990 , was privatized in 1994 and has been part of the Bitburger brewery group since 2002. From 1991 the brewery was completely modernized and expanded. The historic, listed brewery facade was preserved.
The Wernesgrüner Brauerei GmbH is the main sponsor of the football regional league of Saxony , the so-called "Wernesgrüner Sachsenliga" .
The brewery takes the water from a well surrounded by forest southeast of the built-up location, which is fed by the groundwater flows on the south-west slope of the Kuhberg , and another well in the forest on the southern slope of the Steinberg . Five water tanks close to the brewery sites serve to buffer the water.
