Karl Rudolf Hagenbach
Karl Rudolf Hagenbach (born March 4, 1801 in Basel ; † June 7, 1874 there ) was a Swiss theologian , church historian and poet.
Life

Karl Rudolf Hagenbach was born as the son of the anatomy professor Karl Friedrich Hagenbach (1771–1849). After finishing school in his hometown of Basel, he enrolled in 1815 at the city's university and studied from 1818 theology . Already then he got to know the writings of Johann Gottfried Herder . In 1820 Hagenbach moved to the University of Bonn , where he - according to his own admission - was most influenced by Friedrich Lücke . He later recommended him to the University of Berlin , where Hagenbach became a student of August Neander and Friedrich Schleiermacher , among others . In Bonn, Hagenbach became a member of the Bonn fraternity in 1820 , after having been a corresponding member of the fraternity cooperative / association for the processing of scientific subjects in Freiburg from 1818 .
In the spring of 1823 Hagenbach returned to Basel, where he received his licentiate . There he soon made the acquaintance of Wilhelm Martin Leberecht de Wette . With the support of this, Hagenbach became a private lecturer at the university in the same year . In 1825 the University of Basel appointed him extraordinary professor for the history of the church and dogma . In 1829 he was named Dr. theol. hc honored and appointed full professor of church history. Five times (1832, 1840, 1849, 1850 and 1862) he was the rector of the university. Martin Birmann and Jonas Breitenstein were among his students .
Together with de Wette, Hagenbach founded the Protestant Aid Association of Switzerland in 1842 and headed it as its first board member. During these years Hagenbach also published some hymns . In the years 1845 to 1868 Hagenbach acted as publisher of the church gazette for Switzerland . In the politically difficult years from 1848 onwards, Diethelm Georg Finsler supported Hagenbach significantly in maintaining the unity of the church in Switzerland. In addition to his theological and ecclesiastical writings, Hagenbach also published the volume of poems Luther and his time and, in 1846, a two-volume collection of poems (2nd edition published in 1876). He also wrote some popular science articles on Basel history for the New Year's papers for Basel's youth .
Karl Rudolf Hagenbach died three months after his 73rd birthday. His grave is on the Wolfgottesacker . His son Eduard Hagenbach-Bischoff became a physicist and was also rector of the University of Basel. In 1876 Ferdinand Schlöth commissioned a monument bust by Hagenbach for the auditorium of the museum on Augustinergasse .
