Diethelm Georg Finsler

Diethelm Georg Finsler (born December 24, 1819 in Zurich ; † April 1, 1899 there ) was a Swiss Reformed theologian .

Life

Diethelm Georg Finsler came from a bourgeois family documented in Zurich since the 15th century, who had found wealth and recognition through the silk trade.

He first studied theology and philosophy in Zurich and then continued his studies with Karl Immanuel Nitzsch in Bonn . After joining the Swiss Zofinger Association in Zurich , he also became a member of the Bonn Wingolf in 1842 . In 1844 Finsler became vicar in Zurich. In 1850 he took up his first pastor in Berg am Irchel . In 1867 he moved to Wipkingen , in 1871 he became pastor at Zurich's Grossmünster . He was the last Antistes from 1866 to 1895the Zurich Church. After the introduction of the new church constitution, for which he had fought for years, he became the first president of the council of churches in 1895 . The Evangelical Church Conference in Switzerland is largely due to his initiative. He also played a major role in making Good Friday an important public holiday in Switzerland.

Finsler was one of the representatives of mediating theology . He published a number of theological writings, mainly on church history, and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1860 by the theological faculty of the University of Basel .

Finsler was married to Magdalena Elisabeth Zeller since 1849. They had seven children, including the classical philologist Georg Finsler and the pastor Rudolf Finsler (1865–1929).
