Georg Finsler (theologian)

Georg Finsler (born January 23, 1860 in Zurich , † November 18, 1920 in Basel ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor and theologian .

Life

Finsler, a son of the businessman Jakob Georg Finsler (1822–1888), studied Protestant theology in Zurich, Basel and Göttingen . In 1884 he became a pastor in Hombrechtikon . In 1890 he went to the grammar school in Basel as a religion teacher . He held this position until his death.

Finsler was best known as a Zwingli researcher. With his comprehensive bibliography of Ulrich Zwingli's writings, published in 1897 , he made decisive preparatory work for the critical Zwingli edition, published since 1904 in the Corpus Reformatorum series , which he edited together with Emil Egli and after his death in 1908 with Walther Köhler . In connection with the editing activity, he also wrote a number of essays and edited source writings in the Sources series on the history of the Swiss Reformation, including the Chronicle of Bernhard Wyß 1519–1530. For the anniversary of the Zurich Reformation in 1919, he published a selection of Zwingli's works.
