Emil Egli (theologian)

Emil Egli (born January 9, 1848 in Flaach ; † December 31, 1908 in Zurich ) was a Swiss Reformed theologian and church historian .

Life

Emil Egli was born in Flaach in the canton of Zurich on January 9, 1848 as the son of the geographer Johann Jakob Egli and his wife Elisabetha Hofmann. Prepared for schools in Winterthur and St. Gallen , he moved to the University of Zurich in 1866 . In 1870 he was appointed vicar in Kappel am Albis . Two years later he was appointed pastor in Dinhard . He moved to Aussersihl as such in 1876. His habilitation took place in 1879. In 1885 he went to Mettmenstetten as pastor . In 1889 the University of Zurich appointed him Associate Professor of Church Archeology and Church History . In 1893 he was promoted to full professor. Egli also made a name for himself by researching the life and work of Ulrich Zwingli . So he founded a museum dedicated to the reformer. Egli died on December 31, 1908 at the age of 60 in Zurich.

He worked for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie , for which he wrote three articles, including about his father and about Zwingli.
