from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Jakob Füssli (born June 16, 1792 in Zurich ; † June 3, 1860 in Hottingen ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman.

Life

Johann Jakob Füssli came from the Glockengiesserfamilie Füssli and was the son of Glockengiessers and Chief Justice John Füssli (1750-1817).

After studying theology, he was ordained in 1814 and elected pastor in Wollishofen in 1815 . In 1820 he became pastor in Birmensdorf and from 1828 until his death he was pastor at the Kreuzgemeinde , which under him rose from a branch of the Grossmünster to the independent parish of Neumünster and in 1839 received a new church.

The Zurich Great Council elected him antistes on December 19, 1837 ; In 1839 he led the church opposition to the appointment of David Friedrich Strauss to the University of Zurich , although the mayor Conrad Melchior Hirzel advocated him. David Friedrich Strauss was then retired immediately after his appointment (see also Straussenhandel ).

In 1849 he was voted out of office again by the liberal majority in the council because he had fallen out of favor with them.

From 1830 to 1849 he was a member of the Zurich Church Council and from 1855 first president of the Neumünster Sickness and Deaconry Institution .

He was also a co-founder of the New Church Newspaper for Reformed Switzerland .

Johann Jakob Füssli was married to Maria Hortensia (née Greuter) since 1820.

Memberships

In 1843, Johann Jakob Füssli was a co-founder of the Protestant Church Aid Association, which is still active today to support Protestant Reformed parishes in Germany and abroad, which are in the marked minority, in the project-related promotion of their church life.
