Konrad Furrer

Konrad Furrer , also Conrad Furrer (born November 5, 1838 in Fluntern , † April 14, 1908 in Zurich ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman and university professor .

Life

Konrad Furrer was the son of a farmer.

He enrolled at the University of Zurich in 1857 and studied theology; In 1862 he was ordained and in the same year he became parish administrator in Schlieren .

After traveling to Palestine in 1863 , he became a pastor in Baar , then in Schlieren in 1864 and in Uster in 1870 , until in 1876 he became pastor at the old town church of St. Peter in Zurich.

From 1869 to 1871 he was a private lecturer at the University of Zurich; During this time he completed his habilitation with The Significance of Biblical Geography for Biblical Exegesis . In 1889 he became associate professor for the Old Testament and general history of religion at the University of Zurich . In 1900 he was dean of the theological faculty .

He had a friendship with the Palestine explorer Titus Tobler , about whom he wrote a biography .

Since 1872 he was married to Susanna (née Frei) (1845–1895).

Spiritual and literary work

He was best known for his sermons and his lecturing activities, such as his controversies with atheist socialists in 1893 in the club house of the Eintracht Zurich workers' association , the lectures on general biblical questions in the old Tonhalle in 1895 and on Catholicism held in the Church of St. Peter 1899, heavily attended. Theologically he was classed among the pious , undoctrinal liberals and, in addition to some popular scientific writings, wrote a book about his journey to the Holy Land , which, thanks to his precise observations, can still be considered an interesting and important source on the conditions in Palestine at that time.
