The Foundation has two roots, the first to the 19th century: the Evangelical Association of the Canton Zurich opened in 1858 when Hegibachplatz in Zurich the "health and Diakonissenanstalt Neumünster", its first president Johann Jakob Füssli was, which was converted into a foundation in 1931 . In 1933, the Neumünster Hospital moved to a new building in the Zollikerberg community for reasons of space. The second root comes from the Swiss non-profit women's association . In 1901 he founded the “Swiss Nursing School Foundation, Nurse School and Hospital, Zurich”. The founding story is a piece of women's history. Anna Heer and Marie Heim-Vögtlin , the first Swiss doctors to complete their medical studies at the University of Zurich , were committed to founding the nursing school. Both the nursing school and the deaconesses trained nurses in their homes. What made it possible for many women to work was not a matter of course at the time. The Rehalp nursing home in Zurich closed in February 2019 and is now used externally by another nursing home.

On January 1, 1998, the two traditional foundations merged under the current name "Stiftung Diakoniewerk Neumünster - Swiss Nursing School". After the Zurich government council decided in 2004 to concentrate vocational training in health care on two centers, the Careum training center Zurich was founded in 2005 with the partners Kalaidos , Neumünster and Eleonorenstiftung. In 2007 the last nursing specialists completed their training at the “Vocational School for Nursing - Neumünster”. The director of the foundation is the health economist Werner Widmer
