The umbrella organization of Swiss non-profit women (SGF) is one of the oldest organizations of the Swiss women's movement . It was founded in Aarau in 1888 as a Swiss non-profit women's association . The association was initiated by Emma Boos-Jegher , Emma Coradi-Stahl and Rosina Gschwind-Hofer , who had left the Swiss Women's Association due to conflicts of interest and political differences with the other board members .

Development and goals

The SGF quickly developed into the umbrella organization of non-profit women’s associations in Switzerland, but was initially not active on a political level, but exclusively on a practical level. For example, he campaigned for the promotion of education and training for girls and women. According to the view taken by the association, women from all walks of life should be able to secure their livelihoods or that of their families themselves. In practice, this attitude was implemented, for example, with the establishment of housekeeping or maid schools, nursing schools or a “horticultural school for daughters”. In 1901 he founded the “Swiss Nursing School Foundation, Nurse School and Hospital, Zurich”. The founding story is a piece of women's history. Anna Heer and Marie Heim-Vögtlin , the first Swiss doctors to complete their medical studies at the University of Zurich , were committed to founding the nursing school. In 1908 the SGF was one of the main initiators of the Swiss Association for the Protection of Children and Women (future Pro Juventute ).

During the general mobilization of the First World War , the SGF coordinated the welfare work of the women's associations in all major Swiss cities.

At the end of 1918, the SGF became politically active for the first time with its support for the motion of the national councilors Greulich and Göttisheim to introduce women's suffrage. However, women's suffrage in Switzerland was only introduced in 1971.

At the general meeting in 2004, the name was changed to the umbrella organization of Swiss non-profit women (SGF).
