Anna Heer (born March 2, 1863 in Olten ; † December 9, 1918 in Zurich ) was a Swiss doctor , founder of the Swiss Nursing School with a women's hospital in Zurich, co-founder of the Swiss Nursing Association and its first president.

biography

Anna Heer grew up as the eldest of eleven children (seven of whom reached adulthood) in Olten until 1875, then in Suhr . She later studied medicine at the University of Zurich and graduated with a doctorate in 1892 . She submitted her doctoral thesis on skull base fractures to Rudolf Ulrich Krönlein , "... to this outstanding boss and scholar", from whom she must have been promoted.

Her field of activity as a specialist was less gynecology or paediatrics , but rather surgery . She is considered the first Swiss surgeon. She was strongly committed to the development and professionalization of nursing (without religious obligations for those working in these professions) in Switzerland. In 1901 she and her colleague Marie Heim-Vögtlin founded the Swiss Nursing School with a women's hospital in Zurich . In 1910 Anna Heer founded the Swiss Nursing Association together with the doctor Walter Sahli (1860–1916), who set up the Lindenhof School for Red Cross Sisters of the Swiss Red Cross in Bern in 1899 . This professional association, of which Anna Heer became the first president, merged with the National Association of Graduated Sisters of Recognized Schools in Switzerland, founded in 1936, to become the Swiss Association of Graduated Nurses and Nurses , the forerunner of the Swiss Professional Association of Nursing Women and Nursing Specialists . Anna Heer resigned from her position in 1916. Her partner was Matron Ida Schneider (1869–1968).

One street in Zurich and one in Suhr were named after Anna Heer, who helped shape the reform of Swiss nursing at the end of the 19th century. In 1963, Swiss Post issued a special “ Pro Patria ” stamp in memory of Anna Heer.
