The Swiss Professional Association of Nursing Women and Men (SBK) ( French : L'Association suisse des infirmières et infirmiers (ASI)) is a professional organization for nursing women and men based in Bern, founded in Switzerland in 1910 .

The association, which is organized in 13 sections, represents the interests of around 25,000 nursing professionals (as of 2017).

The statutory objectives of the SBK are:

  • establish nursing as an independent profession and strengthen the position of nursing professionals;
  • to preserve and promote the social and economic conditions of its members;
  • to further develop health and nursing care and to ensure its quality;
  • to support the members in their professional activities and development;
  • to participate in decisions in the health care system;
  • to get actively involved in professional and advanced training and to promote teaching and research in nursing.

The SBK is organized democratically and consists of the national association with the office in Bern, regional sections, professional associations, professionally oriented interest groups and collective members.

In addition to representing its members, the SBK, as a contractual partner of Santésuisse , the industry association of Swiss health insurers, regulates the activities of around 2,000 freelance nurses, regulates and organizes specialist training and issues awards.

"Nursing" trade journal

The SBK publishes the trilingual scientific journal Krankenpflege / Soins infirmiers / Cure infermieristiche ( ISSN 0253-0465). It appears twelve times a year in a WEMF-certified edition of 26,936 copies and is in its 111th year. Nursing is also the association's official publication organ.

Federal popular initiative for strong nursing care "Nursing initiative"

On January 17, 2017, the SBK launched the “ federal popular initiative for strong care”. The required signatures were submitted to the Federal Chancellery on November 7, 2017. On November 27, 2017, the Federal Chancellery stated that the popular initiative had formally come about with 114,078 valid signatures.

Memberships

The SBK is represented in around 30 national and international organizations, including the International Council of Nurses , the European Federation of Nursing Associations and the European Forum of National Nursing an Midwifery Associations and WHO.

Association management

Yvonne Ribi is the managing director of the SBK . The association is chaired by Helena Zaugg (President) and Sophie Ley (Vice-President). The central board is the strategic decision-making body.
