Education (Switzerland)

The training structure in Switzerland in the field of health care and nursing is currently being reformed further. On January 1, 2004, the Vocational Training Act (BBG) of December 13, 2002 came into force. With this law and the revised federal constitution , the regulatory and supervisory authority for non-university vocational training in health care was transferred from the cantons to the federal government.

Up to this point in time, the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Health Directors (GDK) served as the political coordination body. While the GDK released educational policy decisions and legally binding norms, the actual monitoring of these decisions was carried out by the Swiss Red Cross (SRK). The SRK is also responsible for the recognition of foreign diplomas in Switzerland.

The previous diploma courses with diploma levels I (DN I) and II (DN II) are now being gradually transferred to the tertiary level courses. These are offered or affiliated with higher technical schools (HF) or technical colleges (FH) and last three years.

At the higher technical schools the new degree is dipl. Nursing specialist HF / dipl. Nursing specialist HF .
