Charlie Gaines
Charles "Charlie" Gaines (* 8. August 1900 in Philadelphia ; † 23. November 1986 ) was an American jazz - trumpet player and bandleader .
As a teenager, Gaines played in brass bands in his hometown. In 1920 he moved to New York City , where he became a member of the Wilbur Sweatman Orchestra . He then went to Clarence Williams and then played with Sam Wooding , Earl Walton , Leroy Smith , Fats Waller , Charlie "Fess" Johnson and the Hot Chocolates . In the 1930s Gaines led his own formation in Philadelphia with which he occasionally recorded records, such as in 1934 under the band name Lazy Levee Loungers with Clarence Williams. He then worked as an accompanist for Leroy Smith and also played in the Louis Armstrong Orchestra. In the 1950s he performed again with his own bands in Philadelphia, mostly in the Carroll's jazz club . In the 1960s he had an engagement with a trio at Club Hangover . In the 1970s, Gaines retired.
