List of censuses in Austria
The list of censuses in Austria provides an overview of the results of all censuses in Austria since 1869 for territorial status on May 15, the 2,001th
First censuses
The first census (“description of the soul”) took place in Austria in 1754 under the monarch Maria Theresa . After 1769, no complete censuses were carried out due to resistance from the nobility and the Catholic Church.
On March 23, 1857, Emperor Franz Joseph I issued an imperial ordinance for the Austrian Empire , at that time still including Hungary, with the provision of censuses . The survey of October 31, 1857 on the basis of this ordinance was assessed as inadequate, since only the native population was counted, but not the population actually present. As a result of this and technical problems, the Emperor and the Reichsrat replaced the imperial ordinance for Cisleithanien on March 29, 1869 at the instigation of Prime Minister Eduard Taaffe and Interior Minister Carl Giskra with a census law and the first census under this law took place on December 31, 1869. The law stipulated that the next count should be carried out on December 31, 1880, and further counts every ten years. With the Kingdom of Hungary , which has been politically independent from Austria since the compromise of 1867 , agreement was reached that this counting rhythm is also used in Hungary.
Austria-Hungary
According to the first census under the new law, 1869, censuses took place every ten years until World War I (1880, 1890, 1900 and 1910). At the last census on December 31, 1910, the total population was 51,390,223, of which the Austrian half of the empire accounted for 28,571,934.
The population at that time in what is now Austria's territory (based on the territorial status of May 15, 2001) could be calculated from these data:
date | Area in km² (May 15, 2001) ¹ |
Population ¹ | Inhabitants per km² |
---|---|---|---|
December 31, 1869 | 83,871 | 4,497,880 | 54 |
December 31, 1880 | 83,871 | 4,963,528 | 59 |
December 31, 1890 | 83,871 | 5,417,360 | 65 |
December 31, 1900 | 83,871 | 6,003,845 | 72 |
December 31, 1910 | 83,871 | 6,648,310 | 79 |

A census also took place in Austria in 1920, but this was poorly prepared and the results were therefore unusable. The same applies to the 1923 census.

The first real census will be carried out for 2011, with results expected in 2013.
