Ernst Staehelin (born October 3, 1889 in Basel ; † September 11, 1980 ibid) was a Swiss church historian. He was a professor of modern church history at the University of Basel.

Staehelin studied Protestant theology in Basel , Göttingen , Berlin and Marburg and completed his studies in Basel in 1912. In 1916 he completed his habilitation at the University of Basel. Until 1924, Ernst Staehelin was pastor in Thalheim AG and Olten . In 1924 he returned to the University of Basel, first as an associate professor, then from 1927 as a full professor of recent church and dogma history. His retirement took place in 1961 - a year after he had headed the university for the third time as rector . He took on various church and state offices. From 1933 to 1947 he was a member of the church council of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Basel-Stadt , from 1934 to 1946 a member of the cantonal education council and in 1949 a member of the UNESCO Commission in Switzerland.

Since 1921 Staehelin was married to Gertrud Kutter, a daughter of Hermann Kutter .

Staehelin's scientific merit lies particularly in his source editions on figures from Basel church history such as Johannes Oekolampad , Wilhelm Martin Leberecht de Wette and Franz Overbeck and the German Christianity Society as well as in the seven-volume collection of texts The Annunciation of the Kingdom of God in the Church of Jesus Christ - testimonies from all centuries and all denominations (1951–1964).
