1950s in America. Manny Singer, an advertising man and a widower, is looking for a housekeeper and carer for his daughter Molly, who has not spoken since her mother died. He's hiring Corrina Washington, a black woman.

Corrina and Molly become friends, Molly speaks again. Corrina and Manny are also soon friends. This friendship outraged the other local residents. Corrina's relatives are also against this friendship; they fear Manny is just taking advantage of Corrina's kindness.

The break occurs when Manny finds out that Molly - with Corrina's permission - has not been in school for a long time. But it soon becomes clear to him how much Corrina means to Molly and not least to him. He drives to her apartment to fetch her back - but this time not as a housekeeper.

Reviews

Edward Guthmann, San Francisco Chronicle , February 10, 1995, wrote that the comedy was better than previous films with Whoopi Goldberg in which she also played housekeepers. The comedy is sentimental, but not 'sticky'. Goldberg plays one of her best, warmest and most intelligent roles.
