Max Staehelin-Maeglin
Max Stähelin-Maeglin (also Staehelin ) (born February 18, 1880 in Basel ; † August 3, 1968 there ) was a Swiss business lawyer and survivor of the sinking of the Titanic .
Life
In 1907 Stähelin-Maeglin became director of the Schweizer Treuhandgesellschaft , a subsidiary of the Swiss Bank Corporation (now UBS ). On March 22, 1906, he married Anna Martha Maeglin (1885–1955). They had two children together, Martha Marguerite (born December 31, 1906; later married Burckhardt) and Max (1909). His grandfather was the Basel Antistes Immanuel Stockmeyer .
In 1912, Stähelin-Maeglin had to go to New York City on business because a Swiss embroidery company , Arnold B. Heine & Co. , was in financial difficulties and asked for subsidies . To check this, Stähelin-Maeglin traveled to the United States on board the Titanic . He lived in cabin B-50.
Stähelin-Maeglin soon became friends with the passengers, Maximilian Frölicher-Stehli and Alfons Simonius-Blumer , who also came from Switzerland . The three were sitting in the smoking room on the evening of April 14, 1912, playing cards when the collision with the iceberg occurred. The next day both Stähelin-Maeglin and Simonius-Blumer escaped sinking in lifeboat 3; Frölicher-Stehli was able to secure a place in boat no.
After arriving in New York, Stähelin-Maeglin visited the Heine Co. and returned to Europe on May 7, 1912 on board the Deutschland .
In 1928 Stähelin-Maeglin became President of the Swiss Bank Corporation, succeeding Léopold Dubois . He served until 1944 when he was appointed President of the Ciba Group (now Novartis ). Stähelin-Maeglin worked in this function until 1956 before he retired.
His wife Martha had already died in October 1955; Max Stähelin-Maeglin himself died 13 years later and was buried on August 7, 1968 in Basel.
