Visbeck

Visbeck is a district of Meschede in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis . On January 1, 2017, Visbeck had 301 inhabitants. The L 840 runs through the village.

Location of the place

Visbeck is located about 9 km southeast of the core town of Arnsberg and 11 km west of Meschede. This is where the Surmeckesiepen and the Resmecke meet, called the Visbecker Bach after their confluence.

history

The westernmost district of the city of Meschede is Visbeck. The written tradition of Visbeck begins with the name of the knight Conrad von Visbeck, who renounced his claims to the goods he sold in Nuttlar in 1242 . In the following years Conrad von Visbeck appears repeatedly as a witness for the abbess Jutta from the monastery in Meschede, but also for Count Gottfried III. from Arnsberg. The fiefdoms of the Counts of Arnsberg show the growing wealth of those of Visbeck.

Chapel in Visbeck

The most visible memory of today's Visbeck of his knightly past is the coat of arms, which goes back to the seal of those of Visbeck. Visbeck changed little over the centuries until the end of the Second World War. Until the local reorganization, Visbeck was an independent municipality in the Arnsberg district . On January 1, 1975 the place was incorporated into the city of Meschede.

Clearly recognizable entrances to the copper tunnels still testify to the attempt to break through the purely agricultural economy.

Christmas Market

Every year again - the last 4 weeks before Christmas, the "allegedly smallest Christmas market in the world" opens its doors in the center of Visbeck. It has already been reported several times on WDR television.
