geography
Velmede is located in the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park and the Ruhr River flows through it.
history
Velmede was first mentioned in 1072 in a document from the Grafschaft monastery . Around 1865, the area of the municipality of Velmede was significantly reduced. The settlements Berlar , Gevelinghausen , Halbeswig , Heringhausen , Nuttlar , Ostwig and Ramsbeck , which formed their own communities, were spun off from the community. Halbeswig was incorporated on April 1, 1938. On January 1, 1975, Velmede came to the new municipality of Bestwig as part of the municipal reorganization .
coat of arms
The blazon is: split by silver and blue; in front a floating blue St. Andrew's cross held together by five golden nails, behind a silver eagle armored with gold.
The St. Andrew's Cross is the symbol of the parish patron, the Holy Apostle Andrew. The eagle and the colors blue and silver are characteristics of the original rulers, the Counts of Arnsberg. The official approval took place on April 3, 1952. |}
religion
The Church of St. Andrew was built in 1848. Presumably there was already an original parish in Velmede around 820 . The parish at that time was responsible for the area from Brilon to Calle or from Assinghausen to the elevations of the Arnsberg Forest.
