Dorndorf is located in the northwest of the Limburg Basin and on the eastern edge of the Westerwald . The district is triangular in shape, with the point facing south. In the northwest it borders on the Dornburg town of Frickhofen and in the south on Thalheim . The western district border is also the state border to Rhineland-Palatinate . There the neighboring towns of Salz and Girkenroth join.

The place itself is located on a slight hill running in a northwest-southeast direction. The entire district rises to the west on the Hauserberg (370 meters), but especially to the north on the broad basal ridge of the Watzenhahn (up to 430 meters on the Hessian and up to 475 meters on the Rhineland-Palatinate side). To the northeast of the village is the Blasiusberg with the Blasius Chapel on the southern slope of the Watzenhahn, but already in the Frickhofen area. A clearly cut brook valley runs southwest and east of the built-up location.

The district consists largely of agricultural land. The high elevations in the west and north and a small elevation south of the place are covered by mixed forest. The basalt quarry north of the village also takes up considerable space. There is an industrial park in the northwest of the village.

history

The first mention under the name "Torendorph" dates back to the year 772 on the occasion of a donation from the Rupertine woman Rachild to the Lorsch monastery . In the 12th and 13th centuries a noble family lived in Dorndorf and a "Daniel von Elkhausen" owned a castle in Dorndorf. The noble family lived in Dorndorf from 1190 to 1327. The castle was destroyed by fire. A chapel was built on their remains.

During the Thirty Years War, Dorndorf suffered greatly from pillaging soldiers from various nations. Hunger and plague raged. In 1636 Dorndorf died out except for one family who moved to "Sleide", today's Schlaudermühle. Many years of bitter need followed. Between 1773 and 1775 the village was set on fire seven times by the arsonist Wilhelm Ludwig and the last time it burned down almost completely. The perpetrator ended his life in Hadamar Prison . This disaster once again plunged the residents into bitter poverty. At that time, the village is said to have partly stood “on the stones”. It took many years for it to recover.

As a result of the boom due to basalt mining, a three-class elementary school was built in 1901 , and a water pipe was built shortly thereafter.

For centuries the main church was the Blasius Chapel for the people of Dorndorf and the neighboring villages. From 1731 the village was assigned to the parish of Frickhofen. In 1913 the village became a parish vicarie. The Catholic parish church of St. Margaretha was completed in 1932 on the site of the old chapel. In 1964 the parish vicarie was elevated to an independent parish.

In 1946 around 240 displaced persons , especially from the Sudetenland , were admitted.

On February 1, 1971, Dorndorf became part of the newly created municipality of Dornburg as part of the regional reform in Hesse .

economy

Basalt quarry on the outskirts

Dorndorf was traditionally a farming and trading village . At the beginning of the 20th century, with the flourishing of the basalt industry, a modest prosperity entered the village. In 1890 the “Nill” quarry was opened with a workforce of 15 to 20 people. There were some failures and in 1921 they started again with about 50 men. In 1925/26 around 300 people were employed. This started a steep upward development in families and in the community.

In the 1950s, aided by the title of a state-recognized resort , tourism in Dorndorf and the resulting pensions were the main income for many families. In 1966 there were 15 guest houses in the village. During this time, a brisk influx of new citizens from the Ruhr area was recorded. Although recreational tourism has been declining steadily since the 1980s, many of the pensions held up until the turn of the 21st century. The reason for this is the settlement of the Indian Avatar Mother Meera in the neighboring town of Thalheim. The darshans she held drew thousands of visitors to the community and even earned her a multi-page article in the New York Times .

Culture and sights

The village community has turned the nickname "Dorndorfer Esel" into a distinguishing feature, so that the donkey was chosen as a landmark. Allegedly it goes back to the priests from the Lubentiusstift in Dietkirchen, to which the parish Blasiusberg belonged in the Middle Ages, and who came to the Westerwald on donkeys to attend church services.

societies

In Dorndorf there are two choirs, the MGV "Eintracht 1877 Dorndorf eV" and the quartet club, a sports club , a VdK local group, a Catholic women's community, the youth club "No Limits", a bird protection group, a beautification club, a ski club, the tractor friends' club , the citizens' initiative "Rettet den Watzenhahn", which takes action against the continued operation of the quarry, and the Dorndorf volunteer fire brigade , which was founded in 1928 and to which a youth fire brigade has been a member since March 1, 1975 .

Buildings

Catholic parish church St. Margaretha

In his later creative phase, the Frankfurt architect Martin Weber designed today's church building, which was built in 1932 on the site of an old chapel from 1852. The south wall and choir of this chapel were integrated into the new building. In the course of the construction work, the remains of the medieval castle complex, probably from the 10th century, with two meter thick walls were found. The foundation stone of the parish church rests on one corner of the exposed tower.

The building is characterized by the New Objectivity . The facade is characterized by unplastered, roughly hewn quarry stone from the region and by tall, narrow windows. Inside, the exposed longitudinal beams and candle arches of the ceiling with their play of light and shadow shape the spatial effect. When viewed from the entrance, the decreasing distances between the arches lead to an optical deepening of the choir room . A wooden statue of St. Margaret from the second quarter of the 18th century was taken from the old chapel .

primary school

Today's primary school was built in 1900/01 from roughly hewn porous rubble stones from the Rolsberg quarry. Window reveals and roof consoles made of lighter travertine stand out clearly. The facade style thus resembles several buildings in the village, but also numerous schools, train stations and other public buildings in the region that were built between 1840 and 1930. Another outbuilding in the schoolyard takes on this design, a second is designed as a half-timbered structure with clinker brick lining. A small memorial in front of the school commemorates those who fell in both world wars. Address: Hauptstrasse 38

Garden streets 2 (barn)

It is one of the few remaining half-timbered barns in the area and also a particularly large-format structure. The walls are partially plastered today. Where this is not the case, the very simple and regular framework with relatively small compartments, which was built around 1800, can be clearly seen. The main gate also probably dates from the construction period.

Grabenstrasse 7

This very small house was possibly originally a single courtyard . The half-timbered structure visible today probably dates from around 1700. This makes it the oldest preserved half-timbered structure in town. However, it is only partially available and has been replaced by clinker brickwork on the street gable side and in parts of the ground floor. There are ornamental carvings on the framework, especially on the threshold, its filler wood and beam heads.

Main street 24a

This two-zone half-timbered house from around 1800 has a very simple design. Only the threshold of the upper floor shows profile carvings. The late Biedermeier coffered door with a skylight is an important construction detail .

Hauptstrasse 76

This courtyard is made up of two gabled houses. The design of the building erected in 1913 from Molsberg basalt quarry stone corresponds to several other characteristic buildings in the village. Large-format corner blocks on the residential building structure the masonry. Another building decoration is the wrought iron railing at the staircase. In older lists of monuments, the complex is listed at its former address, Hauptstrasse 48.

Hauptstrasse 92

This former entrepreneur's villa stands out due to its strict cube shape, but the Rolsberg quarry stone masonry re-establishes the reference to the local building style. With its hipped roof and large windows, the building, erected in 1937, is a typical representative of late classicism . The façade is characterized by studs at the corners and the contrast between the cuboids in the plinth and broken stones in the walls. The partially preserved outer wall of a former park belongs to the monument. In older monuments lists the house is listed at its former address, Hauptstrasse 70.

Heinrich-Berlenbach-Strasse 2 / Westerwaldstrasse 2

It is a particularly large-format single house, which was probably built in the late 18th century in an exposed location opposite the church. A barn was built in front of Westerwaldstrasse and the slateing of the west gable is more recent. The window division according to the construction period is largely retained. Today the entire facility is in a very poor state of construction.

Clever mill

The Schlaudermühle is about one kilometer south of Dorndorf near the neighboring town of Thalheim. The existing today home of the mill was from 1800 on the site of the late medieval deserted village built Schlauden. The two separately built construction sections are clearly recognizable. One half of the eaves facing the courtyard is provided with significantly denser studs. Also facing the courtyard side, the threshold of the upper floor has architectural decorations in the form of a profile. There is a wooden cross on the site, which, according to the inscription, was erected in 1815 by the miller at the time. A small wayside shrine with an ornamental frieze rests on its beech-like base. The original body is kept in the building.

Economy and Infrastructure

Economic structure

Dorndorf has the largest industrial and commercial area in the municipality of Dornburg , in which, in addition to numerous craft businesses , there is also a large textile company.

Facilities

Dorndorf now has a primary school in the building of the former elementary school , a kindergarten and a village community hall, as well as a sports field made of artificial turf.

The Dorndorf volunteer fire brigade (founded in 1928 and with a youth fire brigade since March 1, 1975 ) provides fire protection and general help.
