Salz is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Wallmerod Association .

Geographical location

The community is located in the Westerwald between Montabaur and Rennerod .

history

“Always illuminated by the sun - inclined to the south - a wonderful piece of earth that can be seen by the wanderer. The old church greets the Nassauische Land far away - it has existed in the village for hundreds of years ”. This is how local poet Günther Weimer describes the special charm of salt.

The first settlements go back to the time before Christ. In 1150, salt was on record as a parish and, since the late Middle Ages, also as a place of jurisdiction with its tithe court. In 1564 salt came to the Electorate of Trier .

The Romanesque pillar basilica has been the town's landmark for almost a millennium. "St. Adelphus ”was initially a collegiate church, was later expanded to include a late Gothic choir and is now part of the Limburg diocese.

politics

mayor

Holger Wörsdörfer became the local mayor of Salz on June 19, 2019. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was elected for five years with 89.94% of the vote.

Wörsdörfer's predecessor as local mayor was Rainer Malm.

coat of arms

Blazon : "A continuous red bar cross in silver, angled by four blue squares set across corners."

Heraldic justification: The coat of arms was designed based on the seal of the court of salt, which was used from the end of the 17th century until the end of the 18th century. The red cross reminds of the fact that Salt belonged to the Electorate of Trier from 1564 to 1803 , the four squares represent “talking” blue salt crystals that refer to the place name.

Culture and sights

Buildings

The Catholic parish church of St. Adelphus is a Romanesque basilica with a late Gothic choir. Johann Heinrich Keverich is buried in the church, as indicated by a grave plaque. Keverich came from Ehrenbreitstein and was Oberhofkoch of the Elector and Archbishop of Trier, Johann IX. Philipp von Walderdorff from Molsberg. This alone may not justify the grave tablet. But Keverich was also the grandfather of the musical genius Ludwig van Beethoven .

The small moated castle Hof Neuroth is located near the village in the direction of Bilkheim .
