geography

Geographical location

Gackenbach is located in the Buchfinkenland in the southern Westerwald and in the geographical triangle between Koblenz , Limburg an der Lahn and Montabaur in the middle of the Nassau Nature Park .

Community structure

In addition to the main town of Gackenbach, Dies and Kirchähr are districts. This has around 70 inhabitants and is located below Gackenbach in the Gelbach Valley . The district of Kirchähr is also located in the Gelbach Valley and consists mainly of the Karlsheim Kirchähr, a youth and conference center of the Limburg diocese with an associated campground .

history

Today's main town Gackenbach was first mentioned in documents in 1447. The year 1290, which is also mentioned, is based on the mention of the original name Gackenbacher , which probably refers to the deserted Gockenbach near Hellenhahn . The construction of a chapel in the village is mentioned for 1706, which was demolished in 1935. In the second half of the 18th century, lead and silver mining was carried out near Gackenbach, to which an older tradition was ascribed at that time. In 1879 the current parish church was built, in 1881 that of the rectory, making Gackenbach the center of the parish. According to tradition, the Sarnburg, which can no longer be grasped today, was located near Gackenbach . There were 17 campfire sites in the village in 1563, 137 inhabitants in 1787 and 163 inhabitants in 1814. The census from 1818 summarizes Gackenbach, Dies and Kirchähr with 239 inhabitants.

The current district of Kirchähr was initially the more important settlement, as the seat of the local parish was located there. The name goes back, like that of Weinähr , to Anara as the old name of the Gelach . The parish of Kirchähr is mentioned for the first time in 1346, but is likely to be older because, like Esten-Holzappel (first mentioned in 1198), it came from the parish of Humbach , which in turn dates back to the 10th century. The parish included Gackenbach, Dies, Horbach , Hübingen , at times also Ettersdorf and the now desolate places Sarenberg (around 500 meters south-southeast of the church in Gackenbach), Wilchenhausen and Nentzingen. In terms of architectural history, the west tower of the church in Kirchähr can be found in the 12th century, its nave in the 13th century. In the middle of the 17th century, the choir and aisles were built in the late Gothic style . In 1680 a rectory was built to replace the older previous building. The seat of the parish was transferred to Gackenbach in 1881, which was more central to the other associated places and probably had significantly more inhabitants. Instead of the initially planned demolition, the church was restored in 1908. A parish school was established in Kirchähr in the second half of the 17th century. The schoolhouse continued to exist at least until 1816. The parish of Kirchähr also formed a subdivision of the secular office of Montabaur, called a "colliery", which was headed by a Heimberger in Kirchähr by 1541 at the latest .

The current district of Dies was first mentioned in 1343. However, the mention of this brook dates back to the middle of the 10th century, at the earliest in 913. The place originally consisted of two parts north and south of this brook. The northern part belonged to the Humbach-Montabaur tithes, the southern part to the Winden-Weinähr manor. It was not until 1818 that the Duchy of Nassau was merged and incorporated into Gackenbach-Kirchähr. Economically, the place was shaped by several court rides and one, from the second half of the 18th century, at least two mills.
