The Sarnburg , also known as Samburg or Saumburg , is an abandoned hilltop castle on the site of today's Wildlife and Leisure Park Westerwald south of Gackenbach in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . Remains of the foundation stone were found as relics 80 years ago on a plateau in the forest, which were then used for road construction.

Sarnburg is closely connected to the legend of the knight Gacho, a follower of Charlemagne , who is said to have lived here with his wife Nelda and his children. The Sarnburg is likely to be one of the earliest castles in the Westerwald . The legend is documented in the 1969 yearbook of the Catholic diocese of Limburg .
