The neighboring communities are Siershahn , Wirges , Dernbach and Ransbach-Baumbach .

history

First clearly mentioned in a document as Evernhan in 1324 , Ebernhahn belongs to the younger Westerwald villages and hardly appears in the course of the Middle Ages. After the devastating effects of the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) it counted just 42 inhabitants together with the neighboring Siershahn .

Ebernhahn, whose name is derived from the Old High German word hag for "enclosure" or "grove" (translated roughly: "belonging to the boar enclosure"), was under Kurtrier until 1803 , then under Nassau , from 1866 finally under Prussian administration has been part of the Wirges community since 1971 , and has been part of the Westerwaldkreis with the district town of Montabaur since 1974 .

In the middle of the 19th century, industry found its way into the community, above all the clay-mining companies. With industrialization, the place, like all communities in the Kannenbäckerland , experienced a rapid upward development: Ebernhahn had just 241 inhabitants in 1818, by the turn of the century it was already around 500.

Since the large clay companies all penetrated Ebernhahn from outside, the necessary reaction to this was the development of the local haulage industry, which, after the end of clay mining in the district, is still the most important supporter of the local economy in the form of large passenger and trucking companies .

On March 11, 1945, the place fell victim to a heavy bomb attack by the US Air Force , in which 52 people were killed and 32 buildings were completely destroyed.

religion

Catholic parish and parish church of the "Conception of Mary"

History of the parish

In 1902 Ebernhahn was appointed an independent chapel community. In 1921 Ebernhahn was promoted to parish vicarie, and in 1964 to parish . Until April 1984 the parish had its own pastor. Then Ebernhahn shared the local pastor with the neighboring Dernbach . In view of the increasing shortage of priests, Ebernhahn had to be incorporated into the Wirges Parish Association in 1996, just like Dernbach , while maintaining the status of a parish. Since January 1st, 2015 Ebernhahn has been a parish of the "new type of parish" St. Bonifatius Wirges.

History of the parish church

The first chapel was built in Ebernhahn in 1871. This was laid down in 1911 and the Church of the Conception of Mary was built. The church was expanded in 1958 and the current bell tower was added in 1965 (instead of the earlier onion dome). In 1978 the interior of the church was renovated. In 1997 extensive outdoor work took place. In addition, the rectory and sacristy were rebuilt. In 2006 a fundamental renovation and redesign of the interior of the parish church "Mary Conception" took place. The decisive architectural feature is the relocation of the altar from the choir to the center of a semicircle consisting of four segments, which is formed by the benches for the worshipers. On November 4, 2006, the newly erected altar, the capstone of which is made from the old altar, was opened by Abbot emeritus Dr. Solemnly consecrated to Thomas Denter .

Patronage and parish fair

The patronage of the parish is on December 8th, the “Solemnity of the Blessed Mother Mary received without original sin”. His parish fair celebrates Ebernhahn every year on the first Sunday in May.

Evangelical Christians

About 100 Protestant Christians live in Ebernhahn who belong to the Evangelical Martin Luther Church Congregation in Wirges.

coat of arms

Ebernhahn coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided by red and silver stepwise obliquely to the left; above a silver wagon wheel with eight spokes, below a nine-leaved green rowan branch. "
Reasons for the coat of arms: Red and silver stand for the Electorate of Trier colors. The symbols shown describe three special features of the Ebernhahn community: the steps indicate clay mining, the wagon wheel indicates the local haulage trade and the rowan branch indicates the etymological origin of the place name.

Parish partnership

Ebernhahn and the French community of Marolles-les-Braults in the Sarthe department have been partners since 1973 . The official partnership meetings take place every year on the weekend of Pentecost; with even years in Ebernhahn, with odd years in Marolles-les-Braults. On April 22, 2007, the square in front of the multi-purpose hall in Ebernhahn was given the name “Place Marolles” after a fundamental redesign as an expression of the partnership.

Ebernhahn is on the A3 at the level of the Dernbach triangle. It is around 3 km to the Ransbach-Baumbach junction and around 8 km to Montabaur. The Montabaur ICE train station on the Cologne – Rhein / Main high-speed line and the Limburg-Staffel – Siershahn line are at the same distance . The Ebernhahn community has a stop on the Engers – Au railway line, which is partly operated by tourism .

village life

Ebernhahn is known beyond the borders of the Westerwald for its around 30 local companies and its numerous associations, including the music association founded in 1913 and the hiking friends Ebernhahn, which has existed since 1980.

As a striking event, the Musikverein holds a ring concert every autumn with three other orchestras at different locations. Every year on the last weekend before the summer holidays, the music association gives an open-air serenade on the old village linden tree in the center of the village. The hiking enthusiasts are represented every week nationally, partly internationally, at numerous hiking events. Every year in August, the hiking enthusiasts organize their own “International People's Hike”.

The Thalia men's choir, which was founded in 1880 and has won numerous national and international awards , was converted into a mixed choir in 2011. The Ebernhahn church choir, founded in 1949, disbanded in 2013.

Two tennis clubs (TC Blau Weiß, TC 77) and the football club founded in 2008 are active in the sporting field.

Culinary

Local history researcher Werner Greif from Montabaur reports:

“In the 1930s, the boar cockerel men had to collect their stamp money in Montabaur . Then they went to the Kalb inn and ordered half a hammock of meat sausage , a Schösschen (double roll) and a bottle of beer. Today you can still order "a cockerel" in many local inns. "

The largest Döppekooche in the world, a Rhenish specialty, eleven amateur cooks were involved in making, was baked in a bread factory in Ebernhahn in 1983. It yielded about 4000 servings with a surface area of almost 5 square meters.

Village anthem

Since June 2006 Ebernhahn has had its own anthem under the title “Dou bess dott Dorf” (Ebernhahn dialect for “You are the village”).

controversy

In 2014, the local council decided to sell the community-owned land in the Kronenacker district, which led to differences within the citizenship.
