Wahlrod is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Hachenburg community .

Geographical location

The community is located in the northern part of the Westerwaldkreis and borders the Altenkirchen district . Neighboring places are Borod in the northwest, Mudenbach and its district Hanwerth in the northeast, Winkelbach and Höchstenbach in the southeast and Berod in the west. The highest points of the district are the elevation behind the church and cemetery ( 299  m above sea  level ) and the Lauterbach ( 283  m above sea level ).

Wahlrod also includes the Hammermühle, Hehlinger Hof and Marzauer Mühle residential areas .

history

Wahlrod was first mentioned in a document in 1249 . The place was formerly called Waldenrode and is probably named after a "Waldo" who was the abbot of Maximin Abbey in Trier and who in the 9th century donated the Roßbach church, south of Wahlroder Wald, now in ruins .

Municipal council

The municipal council in Wahlrod consists of twelve council members, who were elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote, and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Sandra Dörner became local mayor of Wahlrod on July 29, 2019. In the runoff election on June 16, 2019, she prevailed against the previous incumbent with a share of the vote of 52.53%, after none of the original five applicants had achieved a sufficient majority in the direct election on May 26, 2019.

Dörner's predecessors since 2011 were Klaus Schmidtgen, and before that Eberhard Dineiger, who had given up the office for professional reasons.
