history

Based on the first mentions, Irmtraut is the oldest municipality in the Verbandsgemeinde Rennerod. Irmtraut was first mentioned in a document in 879, when Count Gebhard in Lahngau donated goods to St. Severus Abbey in Gemünden .

The toponym 879 Ermetrode, Irmtroit, Ermentrut, Eremtraut, 1215 Irmentroth, 1276 Irmittrerode, 1296 Yrmentrade, around 1300 Yrmetroyde, 1354 Irmtrode, 1453 Ermentraide, 1492 Irmtrode, 1516 Irmptroit, 1525 Irmtrudt, 1711 in many other ways of writing, Irmtrudt in 1778 , is one of the numerous place names on -rod. However, as with the name of the small desert Obentraut on the Dornburg, this is no longer recognizable in its current form of name and in the dialect forms Irndert, Indet, Erndert.

Today's St. Mary's Church was first mentioned in 1355 as a chapel and in 1454 as a church consecrated to St. Anthony . The early Gothic choir tower , however, suggests that its origin is much older.

Irmtraut's

In Irmtraut, an extensive, 500-year-old low - nobility family developed. Her coat of arms showed a black goat in silver. The oldest tangible member of the family is Heinrich, mentioned for the first time in 1215, who was ministerial subordinate in Westerburg . There are only a few documents about the family that have survived today, but they show a main focus of ownership in the Westerwald and free float in the northern Taunus , in the Rheingau , on the lower reaches of the Moselle , in the Maifeld and on the Ahr . Those of Irmtraut appear particularly frequently as bailiffs and bailiffs in Westerburg and as abbesses in Gnadenthal . Adam Fole († 1455), archdeacon in Dietkirchen , and Margarete, abbess of Neuburg Abbey in 1482, also descended from the family . With Ludwig Wilhelm Heinrich, the male line died out in 1741. Shortly thereafter, Count Palatine Karl Theodor transferred the name of Irmtraut to von Werkamp due to her female descent. This family died out in 1913.

Two former seats of the Lords of Irmtraut have been preserved in Westerburg : the vassal house to the west of Westerburg Castle and a building from the 16th century at the Gemündener Tor, which housed the side branch Fole von Irmtraut. The Langwiesen farm , a former small moated castle of the family between the villages of Boden and Ruppach-Goldhausen, has also been preserved .
