The Nassau Nature Park is a 561.71 km² nature park in the southwestern Westerwald and northwestern Taunus in Rhineland-Palatinate . It was expelled in November 1963 and expanded in 1979.

Geographical location

The Nassau Nature Park is located in the Rhenish Slate Mountains , with the Lahn valley forming its main axis in an east-west direction. The park also includes parts of the Westerwald, the Middle Rhine Valley and the Taunus. Its highest mountain is 545.2  m above sea level. NHN the alarm pole located in the western forest part of Montabaurer Höhe , and the gray head located in the western Hintertaunus is its highest point in the Taunus with 543.4  m . Directly south of the state border, bordering the Nassau Nature Park for a few kilometers, is the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park in Hesse .

The total area (561.71 km²) of the Nassau Nature Park does not include built-up areas in localities in the associated cities and communities. The Rhein-Lahn-Kreis and Westerwaldkreis have a share of 70:30% in the nature park and form the Nassau Nature Park Association.

Protection purpose

"Protective purpose for the entire nature park is to preserve the scenic nature, beauty and special for long and short vacation recreation value of the Lahn valley and its side valleys as well as the right- Rhine slopes and valleys of the Rhine between Lahnstein and Kamp-Bornhofen , varied landscape with, accompanying mountain ranges and the Montabaurer Höhe ".

hike

The nature park has around 290 km of national and 750 km of regional hiking trails. Committed like Lahnhöhenweg , Rheinhöhenweg , Limes trail and the European long-distance path E1 . There are often refuges for hikers here. A total of around 150 hiking parking spaces are available for them.
