Eero Antero Mäntyranta (born November 20, 1937 in Turtola , † December 30, 2013 in Oulu ) was a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Mäntyranta took part in the Winter Olympics four times between 1960 and 1972 , winning three gold, two silver and two bronze medals. At world championships he won two gold, two silver and one bronze medal. In 1962, 1964 and 1968 he won the 15 km run at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival . In 1964 he received the Holmenkollen Medal for this . At the Svenska Skidspelen he won over 30 km in 1961 and in 1965 with the relay. He was also runner-up in 1962 over 30 km and with the relay and in 1964 and 1965 over 30 km each. In March 1964 he won the 15 km run at the Lahti Ski Games for the first time . Two years later he achieved second place over 50 km and in early March 1968 second place over 15 km. In March 1972 he triumphed again in the 15 km run.

Mäntyranta was the first Finnish athlete to test positive for doping . At the Finnish championships in 1972, the consumption of amphetamines could be proven in him , but the finding was initially kept a secret. After the 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo , where he was without a medal, the test result was subsequently known, but Mäntyranta denied any guilt. He later admitted using hormonal drugs that were not banned during his sports career. After a DNA analysis carried out in 1993 on 200 people of his relatives, it was found that Mäntyranta had a point mutation in the gene for the erythropoietin receptor. As a result, he produced more red blood cells and was more productive than athletes without this mutation.

His nephew Pertti Teurajärvi was also known as a cross-country skier.
