Nelson first attracted international attention at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Stryn , Norway , when he was 16th in the mass start race over 30 kilometers and 30th over ten kilometers in the free technique and seventh in the Swedish relay. Until 2011 Nelson took part mainly in FIS races. He had his first of a total of 23 World Cup races in November 2011 at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo , which he finished in 53rd place. In the Tour de Ski 2011/12 he finished 30th. In the 2012/13 season he was fifth in the overall ranking of the Scandinavian Cup. The 2013/14 season was his most successful season to date. In March 2014 he was able to achieve his best result in a World Cup race to date with 5th place over 50 km classic. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he finished ninth in the skiathlon , 15th over ten kilometers in classic technique and won the gold medal with the Swedish relay. In the overall ranking of the 2013/14 World Cup, he reached 46th place. At the Swedish cross-country skiing championship 2014 in Umeå , he won two silver medals over 15 km in classic and skiathlon. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun , he finished 25th in the 50 km mass start race and 14th in the skiathlon. After the 2014/15 season, at the end of which he finished third in the mass start race over 50 kilometers at the Swedish championships, he ended his international career. But he still regularly competes in FIS races in his home country, Sweden.
