Didrik Tønseth (born May 10, 1991 ) is a Norwegian cross-country skier .

Career

Tønseth took part in junior races until 2011. At the European Olympic Winter Youth Festival 2009 in Szczyrk he won silver over 7.5 km classic and bronze over 10 km freestyle. At the 2010 Junior World Championships in Hinterzarten , he won gold with the relay. He had his first World Cup race in January 2012 in Otepää . He finished 17th in the 15 km classic race and thus also got his first World Cup points. He competed in some races of the Scandinavian Cup , which he finished in fourth place in the overall standings in the 2011/12 season. In January 2013 he had his first top ten result in La Clusaz with fourth place. A day later he won the season. At the Norwegian Championships in 2013 in Gåsbu , he won silver in skiathlon and gold, as in the previous year with the relay. With third place over 15 km classic, he made it to the podium for the first time in an individual in December 2013. He finished the Tour de Ski 2013/2014 in ninth place. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he was in the Norwegian squad, but did not take part in any races. He finished the 2013/14 season in 29th place overall. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, he reached fifth place at the Nordic Opening in Lillehammer . He ran the best time of the day on the last stage. This was followed by a second place behind Martin Johnsrud Sundby over 15 km classic in Davos . In July 2016, Sundby was denied this victory because of doping and Tønseth subsequently won his first individual World Cup victory. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun , he took eighth place over 50 km classic and fourth place in the skiathlon. He won gold with the season. At the Norwegian Championships in Røros and Harstad in 2015 , he won bronze in the skiathlon and silver over 10 km and 50 km classic. He finished the season in 21st place in the overall World Cup and 17th in the Distance World Cup. After finishing sixth at the Nordic Opening in Ruka at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, he finished third in the relay in Lillehammer. He finished the 2016 Tour de Ski in seventh place. He was third in the 30 km mass start race in Lenzerheide . In February 2016 he came in the top ten three times including two fourth places in the World Cup. At the end of the season he started at the Ski Tour Canada , which he ended prematurely, and achieved ninth place in the overall World Cup and sixth place in the Distance World Cup. In the 2016/17 season he won the season in La Clusaz and finished 12th in the 2016/17 Tour de Ski . He achieved third place in the 10 km mass start race in Val Müstair . In January 2017 he became Norwegian champion over 15 km classic and third in skiathlon in Lygna . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he won the gold medal with the relay. In addition, he came in sixth place in the skiathlon and fifth place in classic over 15 km. At the end of the season he finished tenth in the World Cup finals in Québec and reached 18th place in the overall World Cup and 12th place in the Distance World Cup. At the end of March 2017, he and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo became Norwegian champions in the team sprint in Gålå . He also achieved third place over 10 km freestyle.

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Tønseth finished seventh in the Ruka Triple . He was second over 15 km classic. In the further course of the season he achieved 17th place at the Tour de Ski 2017/18 and 16th place at the World Cup finals in Falun , reaching 16th place in the overall World Cup and 12th place in the Distance World Cup. At the highlight of the season, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he won the gold medal with the relay. At the beginning of the following season he finished second in Lillehammer over 15 km freestyle and won the overall standings at the Lillehammer Triple. At the following World Cup in Beitostølen , he won third place with the relay. At the Tour de Ski 2018/19 he came in 11th place with two top ten placements. In January 2019 he ran in Otepää on third place over 15 km classic and in Ulricehamn on third place with the relay and over 15 km freestyle. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tirol , he achieved fifth place over 15 km classic. At the end of the season he finished third in Falun in the 15 km freestyle and achieved second place in the 15 km mass start race and eighth place at the World Cup finals in Québec. He finished the season in fifth place in both the overall World Cup and the Distance World Cup. At the Norwegian Championships in Lygna at the end of March 2019 , he was third over 10 km freestyle and second over 50 km classic and together with Fredrik Riseth in the team sprint. In the 2019/20 season he came in 11 World Cup participations, six times among the top teeth, including seventh place in the Ruka Triple and thus achieved 31st place in the overall World Cup.
