The Austrian Institute for European Legal Policy (ÖIER, English Austrian Institute for European Law and Policy ) is an independent research institute for legal policy with offices in Salzburg and Vienna . Since 2008, the institute's research focus has been on legal policy issues in Europe, in particular on issues of democracy and civil rights in the European Union . The institute is headed by Johannes W. Pichler .

The Austrian Institute for Legal Policy was founded in 1989 and was originally funded by the Austrian Ministry of Science , the State of Salzburg and the Archdiocese of Salzburg . In Salzburg, the institute is located in the immediate vicinity of the Austrian Institute for Human Rights , the International Research Center for Fundamental Science and the Salzburg Center of European Union Studies on Edmundsburg . Former research focuses of the institute were legal acceptance, legal security on the internet, family and marriage law, health insurance law, labor law, youth law and patient rights. The institute organizes regular scientific conferences and is the publisher of the series of books on legal policy .

Since 2008, the ÖIER has focused its research on civic participation and civil rights at EU level and has accompanied the introduction of the European Citizens' Initiative in this context .

Since 2014 the institute has been supported by the Austrian Ministry of Science, the Austrian Federal Chancellery and the University of Graz .
