Veli Selim Saarinen (born September 16, 1902 in Martinsaari , Virolahti , † October 12, 1969 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Saarinen, who competed for the Kouvolan Hiihtoseura and the Virolahden Sampo, made his first international appearance at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1926 . There he won the bronze medal over 50 km and also achieved ninth place over 50 km. The following year he won the Lahti Ski Games over 30 km and took third place over 50 km. At the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , he finished fourth over 18 km. The following year he won the silver medal over 50 km and the gold medal over 17 km at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1930 , he ran in sixth place over 50 km and fifth over 17 km. In March 1931 and March 1933, he triumphed in the 50 km run at the Lahti Ski Games. In 1930, 1931 and 1934 he became Finnish champion over 50 km. At the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid in 1932 , he was Olympic champion over 50 km and won the bronze medal over 18 km. The following year he won the gold medal over 50 km at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Innsbruck . He also achieved fourth place over 18 km there. He completed his last international race at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sollefteå in 1934 . There he won the silver medal over 18 km and the gold medal with the relay. After his career, he coached the German cross-country skiing team for the 1936 Winter Olympics . From 1937 to 1968 he was the national trainer for Finnish cross-country skiers.
