Alex Harvey (born September 7, 1988 in Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges , Québec ) is a Canadian cross-country skier .

Career

The French- Canadian is the son of Pierre Harvey , a multiple Canadian Olympic participant in both cycling and cross-country skiing. Alex Harvey started his cross-country skiing career at Club Nordique Mont Sainte-Anne . He was considered one of the strongest young cross-country skiers in Canada and won three medals at junior world championships (two bronze medals in 2007 and one silver in 2008). In 2006 he became Canadian champion over 10 km.

In the Nor-Am Cup , Harvey has won seven races so far and was on the podium nine more times. He made his World Cup debut in February 2008 in Otepää , where he did not score any points. At the dress rehearsal for the Vancouver Winter Olympics in Whistler Olympic Park in January 2009 , he won World Cup points for the first time. In the skiathlon , the Canadian - favored by the absence of most world-class cross-country skiers - came twelfth. The next day in the team sprint, Alex Harvey and George Gray achieved a podium finish with third place. In the 2009/10 season he achieved 22nd place in the Tour de Ski 2009/10 and 32nd place in the World Cup final in Falun . His best results at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver were ninth place in the skiathlon, seventh place with the relay and fourth place in the team sprint. His most successful year so far was 2011, when he won a gold medal at both the U23 Nordic World Ski Championships and the seniors. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme , he won bronze in the sprint.

After a weak start to the 2013/14 season with 42nd place at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo , Harvey won the prologue race at the Tour de Ski 2013/14 , which he did not finish, and achieved second place in the sprint stage in Lenzerheide in January 2014 he won his first World Cup victory in the sprint in Szklarska Poreba . His best placings at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were 17th in the skiathlon and 12th in the team sprint. At the 2014 World Cup final in Falun , he came second overall. He won the 30 km skiathlon race. He finished the season in fifth place in the distance classification and third in the overall World Cup. In the 2014/15 season he came five times in the top ten in 14 World Cup competitions, including tenth place at the Nordic Opening in Ruka and second place in the sprint in Östersund . At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun, he won silver in the classic sprint behind Petter Northug and bronze in the skiathlon behind Maxim Wylegschanin and Dario Cologna . He finished the season in ninth place in the overall and distance World Cup. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he finished seventh at the Nordic Opening in Ruka. He finished second in the 10 km freestyle. At the Tour de Ski 2016 he came in 14th place. At the end of the season he achieved five top ten placements in the Ski Tour Canada , including second place in the sprint in Quebec , fifth place overall, and 13th place in the Distance World Cup and seventh place in the overall World Cup. After finishing ninth in the World Cup mini-tour in Lillehammer , he finished seventh in the 2016/17 Tour de Ski . He finished third in the pursuit stage over 15 km freestyle in Oberstdorf . Ben he won the following World Cups in Toblach together with Len Väljas in the team sprint and in Ulricehamn over 15 km freestyle. He also achieved third place with the relay in Ulricehamn. At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he became world champion in the 50 km mass start race. He also took 12th place in the sprint, sixth place with Len Väljas in the team sprint and fifth place in the skiathlon. At the end of the season he came in second place in the World Cup final in Québec . He won the sprint stage and reached 13th place in the Sprint World Cup, third place in the overall World Cup and second place in the Distance World Cup.

In the 2017/18 season, Harvey finished fourth in the Ruka Triple and with four top ten finishes, including third in the 15 km mass start race in Fiemme Valley, third in the Tour de Ski 2017/18 . In January 2018 he took second place in the mass start race over 15 km freestyle in Seefeld in Tirol . His best result at the highlight of the season, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, was fourth place in the 50 km mass start race. At the end of the season he finished second at the World Cup finals in Falun . He ran the fastest time in the final stage and finished the season in fourth place overall and in the distance World Cup. At the start of the 2018/19 season, he finished 16th in the Lillehammer Triple. He was third in the sprint stage. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 in Seefeld in Tyrol, he came in 16th place in the sprint, 12th place in the 50 km mass start race and with the relay, and sixth place in the skiathlon. At the end of the season he ran at the World Cup finals in Québec with first place in the pursuit and second place in the 15 km mass start race, to second place and finally reached 13th place in the overall World Cup and 11th place in the Distance World Cup.
