Dario Alonzo Cologna (born March 11, 1986 in Santa Maria Val Müstair , today the municipality of Val Müstair , Canton of Graubünden ) is a Swiss cross-country skier . In the 2008/09 season he was the first Swiss ever to win the overall World Cup in cross-country skiing. He has won four gold medals at the Olympic Games and one at World Championships. Four times he was able to win the Tour de Ski as well as the overall ranking of the cross-country skiing world cup.

life and career

Dario Cologna comes from the Münstertal and speaks the regional idiom of Romansh as his mother tongue . At the age of five, Cologna began alpine skiing . Until he switched to cross-country skiing in 1999, he was also active in cycling and football. During his youth, Cologna won numerous medals at national level.

In 2004 he took part in the Nordic Junior World Championships for the first time . In Stryn , Norway , he finished 24th in the victory of the German Franz Göring over 10 kilometers and was eighth with the Swiss relay. A year later he was able to fight for the same distance at the Junior World Championships in Rovaniemi 23rd place and in the pursuit of 29th place. Cologna won his first international medal at the Nordic Junior World Championships in 2006 in Kranj . When defending champion Petter Northug won, he won the bronze medal over 10 kilometers behind Martin Jakš . In the pursuit competition, he took 22nd place.

In the 2006/07 season, Cologna achieved four podium finishes in the Alpine Cross-Country Cup (also known as the OPA Cup). Including a victory in the Austrian Obertilliach over 10 kilometers of freestyle . At the end of the season, he won the overall ranking of the Alpine Cup by a clear margin. These good results made it possible for him to compete in the cross-country skiing world cup . At the end of the season in Falun, Sweden, he managed to win his first World Cup points in the pursuit competition as 25th. At the U23 Junior World Championships in Tarvisio , Cologna won the pursuit competition in front of his compatriot Curdin Perl . He was also unbeatable over the 15 kilometer freestyle and won his second gold medal. This season he was also able to win the Engadin Skimarathon and became the first Swiss champion in the senior class with a classic win over 50 kilometers.

After a moderate start to the 2007/08 season , Cologna managed to establish itself in the senior sector . In Rybinsk , Russia , he made it into the top ten in a World Cup competition for the first time with eighth place over 30 kilometers of freestyle. He also succeeded in doing this in Otepää and Liberec . At the World Cup final in Bormio, he achieved his best result of the season with fourth place in the prologue over 3.3 kilometers of freestyle. At the U23 Junior World Championships in Mals , Cologna won his third U23 gold medal with a victory over the 30 kilometers freestyle.

Cologna in Trondheim (2009)

In the first six individual ratings of the 2008/09 World Cup season , Cologna was the only runner to always rank among the points, including three times in the top ten. On December 14, 2008, he became the first Swiss cross-country skier to take the lead in the overall World Cup. This was followed, again as the first Swiss cross-country skier, to win the Tour de Ski overall . At the 2009 World Championships in Liberec , Czech Republic , he just barely missed his first World Championship medal in the adult category , finishing fourth in the sprint. He also showed a good performance in sixth place over 15 kilometers in classic style. In the pursuit race over 30 kilometers he was 41st and seventh with the Swiss relay.

On March 22, 2009, Cologna became the first Swiss cross-country skier and the youngest cross-country skier in 25 years to win the overall World Cup. He also won the overall standings for the four races of the World Cup finals. On February 15, 2010, he became Olympic champion in the 15 km freestyle in Vancouver . Since Andy Grünenfelder won bronze medal over 50 km in Calgary in 1988 , this was the first Swiss cross-country medal at the Olympics. He is also the only Swiss cross-country skier to date to have topped the podium at the Olympic Games. On February 28, 2010, Cologna was well on the way to securing its second Olympic medal over 50 km. However, the Swiss fell in the last bend 200 m from the finish because of a treacherous sheet of ice and fell back to tenth place. Before that, he was 13th in the pursuit race over 30 kilometers, eleventh in the team sprint and tenth in the Swiss cross-country relay. Two weeks later he won the Engadin Skimarathon for the second time since 2007. In the overall World Cup he finished fourth when the Norwegian Petter Northug won. He achieved the same placement in the Distance World Cup.

Cologna completed his Matura in 2010 as a member of the sports class at the High Alpine Institute in Ftan . In the post-Olympic season 2010/11 , Cologna managed to build on previous successes. On January 9, 2011, after three stage successes, he won the Tour de Ski for the second time ahead of Petter Northug and last year's Czech winner Lukáš Bauer . At the 2011 World Cup , however, he did not get past a ninth place in the sprint. In the mass start race over 50 kilometers (20th), in the pursuit race over 30 kilometers (24th) and in the race over 15 kilometers in classic style (25th), however, he only landed in places between 20 and 30, while he was with the Swiss men's Season ninth was. Cologna also won the Tour de Ski in the 2011/12 season, ahead of Marcus Hellner and Petter Northug. He won the overall ranking for the third time and with a clear lead. In January 2013 he was voted Swiss of the year 2012.

At the Tour de Ski 2012/2013 , which also stopped for the first time in his homeland, the Val Müstair, Cologna took second place behind Alexander Legkow . At the highlight of the season, the 2013 World Championships in Val di Fiemme , he secured his first world title on February 23, 2013 by winning the 30 km pursuit race. On March 3rd the silver medal over 50 km was added. He was also eighth over 15 kilometers in the free technique and sixth in the Swiss relay. In December he was voted Swiss Sportsman of the Year 2013.

While preparing for the 2013/14 Olympic season, Cologna suffered a serious setback when he suffered several torn ligaments in his right ankle while jogging on November 11, 2013. He was operated on immediately and was already back on skis after five weeks. Cologna decided not to start the Tour de Ski and dedicated himself to targeted advanced training. His first competitive appearance after the injury was on January 10 at the Continental Cup in Chamonix . After winning two Swiss championship titles, he returned to the World Cup in Dobbiaco on February 1 and immediately classified himself as second over 15 km. In the first race of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , the 30 km skiathlon , Cologna won an Olympic gold medal for the second time. He then celebrated his third Olympic victory in the 15 km race in classic style. In the team sprint, which he contested with his younger brother Gianluca , he reached the final and was classified in fifth place. He was 26th in the sprint and 27th in the final mass start race over 50 kilometers.

After a weak start to the 2014/15 season in Ruka with places 45 and 24, Cologna came eighth overall at the Nordic Opening in Lillehammer . In the following 15 km classic race in Davos , he came in second. He finished the Tour de Ski 2015 in fourth place. He won the prologue race in Oberstdorf and took third place in the 15 km classic mass start race in Val di Fiemme . At the World Cup race in Rybinsk in January 2015 , he came second in the skiathlon and won the 15 km freestyle. At the 2015 World Championships in Falun , he won silver in the skiathlon. He was also sixth in the mass start race over 50 kilometers, 18th over 15 kilometers in the free technique and fifth in the relay. At the last World Cup race of the season in Oslo , he finished second in the 50 km freestyle mass start race and ended the season in second place in the overall World Cup. After overall World Cup winner Martin Johnsrud Sundby was deprived of overall victory in the 2015 Tour de Ski in July 2016 , Cologna subsequently became overall World Cup winner. He won the Distance World Cup for the second time. At the beginning of the following season he came 13th at the Nordic Opening in Ruka. He came third in the 10 km freestyle stage. The Tour de Ski 2016 , in which he finished second in the 15 km mass start race in Oberstdorf, he had to end prematurely due to an injury. He then finished the World Cup season and started in ski marathon races. He won the 42 km freestyle race in the Gommerlauf in February 2016 . The following month he was fifth in the Wasalauf . After finishing 26th at the beginning of the 2016/17 season in the World Cup mini-tour in Lillehammer, he finished third in the Tour de Ski 2016/17 with a sixth place in the top ten, including third place in the skiathlon in Oberstdorf. At the season highlight, the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he finished seventh in the 50 km mass start race and fourth place with the relay, with the Swiss only missing their first international relay medal since the 1972 Winter Olympics by two tenths of a second. In March 2017 he won the Engadin Skimarathon for the third time . At the end of the season he came in fifth at the World Cup finals in Québec and finished ninth in the Distance World Cup and seventh in the overall World Cup.

Cologna in victory in Seefeld (2018)

The 2018 Olympic season started successfully with victories in the 15 km pursuit in Lenzerheide, the overall victory in the Tour de Ski and benefited from the failure of Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, who had so far been superior in 2018, at the 15 km mass start in Seefeld at the end of January.

For the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang , Korea , Cologna was chosen as the flag bearer of the Swiss delegation . On February 16, Cologna won the 15 km freestyle race, his fourth Olympic victory. He was also sixth in the skiathlon , ninth in the mass start race over 50 kilometers and eleventh in the sprint and with the Swiss cross-country relay. At the World Cup finals in Falun , he came third and finally took second place in the overall World Cup and first place in the Distance World Cup. In March 2018 he became Swiss champion in the 50 km freestyle and sprint.

In the 2018/19 season, Cologna took tenth place in the Lillehammer Triple and 12th place at the World Cup finals in Québec and finally reached 23rd place in the overall World Cup and 19th place in the Distance World Cup. His results at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tirol were eighth place with the relay, seventh place in the mass start race over 50 kilometers, sixth place over 15 km classic and 14th place in the skiathlon. In March 2019 he won the Engadin Ski Marathon for the fourth time and came third at the Swiss Championships in Engelberg over 50 km classic. After third place in the 15 km freestyle in Davos at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, he finished seventh in the Tour de Ski 2019/20 and tenth in the ski tour. At the end of the season he achieved second place with the relay in Lahti and reached tenth place in the overall World Cup and ninth place in the Distance World Cup.
