Alexander Alexandrowitsch Bolschunow ( Russian Александр Александрович Большунов , born December 31, 1996 in Podywotje , Bryansk Oblast ) is a Russian cross-country skier .

Career

Bolschunow started in Vershina Tjoi in November 2012 for the first time in the cross-country skiing Eastern Europe Cup and finished in 188th place over 10 km freestyle and 158th place over 15 km classic. In March 2014 he was in Syktyvkar Russian junior champion in skiathlon . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2015 in Almaty , he came 11th in the sprint. The following year he won the silver medal with the relay at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2016 in Rasnov . He also came in 17th place in the sprint, 11th place over 10 km classic and eighth place over 15 km freestyle. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he achieved his first podium in the Eastern Europe Cup with second place in the 15 km freestyle in Krasnogorsk . This was followed by his first victories in the Eastern Europe Cup in the sprint and over 30 km classic. At the U23 World Ski Championships 2017 in Soldier Hollow , he won the silver medal in the sprint and the gold medal in the skiathlon and over 15 km freestyle. In February 2017 he finished 26th in the sprint and 15th in the skiathlon at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti . The following month he made his debut in Drammen in the cross-country skiing world cup . He got his first World Cup points with ninth place in the sprint. At the Russian championships in Khanty-Mansiysk he was champion over 50 km classic and third in the skiathlon. He finished the season in seventh place in the overall ranking of the Eastern Europe Cup.

In the summer of 2017, Bolschunov won the silver medal in the 22.5 km freestyle and the gold medal in the 20 km mass start race at the Rollerski World Championships in Sollefteå . At the beginning of the 2017/18 World Cup season, he achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup with third place in the Ruka Triple. This was followed by third places in the sprint in Lillehammer and in Davos over 15 km freestyle and in the sprint. At the Tour de Ski 2017/18 he achieved four top ten placements, including third place in the pursuit race in Lenzerheide , sixth overall. At the highlight of the season, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , Bolshunov won four medals. In addition to a bronze medal in the sprint, he won the silver medal in the team sprint, the relay and over 50 km classic. In March 2018, he finished third in the sprint in Drammen and second in the 15 km classic in Lahti . In Falun , he took his first World Cup victory in the 15 km mass start race and the day after achieved first place overall in the World Cup final. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, Bolschunow won the sprint in Ruka and the classic 15 km, finished fifth in the Lillehammer Triple and second in the relay in Beitostølen . At the Tour de Ski 2018/19 he came in fifth with three third places. This was followed by second places in Otepää in the sprint and over 15 km classic, in Ulricehamn with the relay and a victory over 15 km classic in Cogne . At the season highlight, the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tyrol , he won the silver medal in team sprint with Gleb Retiwych , in the 50 km mass start race, in the skiathlon and with the relay. In March 2019, he won the 50 km mass start race in Oslo and the 15 km freestyle in Falun and finished fourth, seventh and two in third place at the World Cup finals in Québec . He won the Distance World Cup and finished second in the overall World Cup and fifth in the Sprint World Cup. At the Rollerski World Championships 2019 in Madona , he won the gold medal over 20 km classic.

After finishing fifth in the Ruka Triple at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, Bolschunow won the skiathlon in Lillehammer and the Tour de Ski 2019/20 with five thirds and one first place. This was followed by two victories in Nové Město , in the skiathlon in Oberstdorf and in the 15 km mass start race in Falun . He finished the 2020 ski tour in seventh place. He won the mass start race over 34 km in Meråker and finished second in the pursuit race in Östersund . At the end of the season he achieved second place over 15 km classic in Lahti and, like last year, won the 50 km race on Holmenkollen . He won the overall and the distance world cup and finished sixth in the sprint world cup.
