Petter Northug Jr. (Born January 6, 1986 in Mosvik , Nord-Trøndelag ) is a former Norwegian cross-country skier . At the age of 20, the six-time junior world champion became the youngest cross-country skier of all time to win a World Cup competition. With 13 gold medals, Northug is the most successful cross-country skier at Nordic World Championships . He also won the overall World Cup twice and was crowned double Olympic champion in Vancouver in 2010 .
life and career
Junior period (until 2005)
After Northug had tried his hand at biathlete and ski jumper in his youth , he decided to concentrate fully on cross-country skiing due to his running strength, after which he was used in the Continental Cup at the age of 16 . In February 2004, his first appearance at the Nordic Junior World Championships followed in his home town of Stryn , where he was the only Norwegian starter to reach the semifinals in the sprint and was sixth in the final ranking. Over the 10 kilometer freestyle, he finished 25th in the victory of the German Franz Göring, directly behind Dario Cologna . In the 2004/05 season he was used for the first time in the World Cup after good results in the Scandinavian Cup , including a second place over 15 kilometers freestyle in Lapinlahti . As the youngest athlete in the starting field, he just missed the finals in the sprint in Drammen as 35th . Two weeks later at the Junior World Championships in Rovaniemi , he showed again what great potential he has. Right at the beginning of the title fights, he secured the title in the pursuit competition in the final spurt. Over the 10 kilometer freestyle distance he clearly won with a 30 second lead over the Japanese Keishin Yoshida , in the sprint competition, which was held in the classic technique, he only had to admit defeat to his compatriot Even Sletten and in the final relay competition he secured himself with the Norwegian Team the silver medal behind the victorious Russian relay.
Breakthrough to the top of the world (2006-2007)
At the beginning of the 2005/06 season Northug could again take part in a World Cup competition in Beitostølen . Having entered the race with starting number 21, he clinched his first World Cup points as 21st over the 15 kilometers. A short time later, he won the Scandinavian Cup for the first time in Vuokatti over 15 kilometers freestyle. In January 2006, Northug won his first Norwegian senior title in the finish sprint against his training mate Frode Estil in the pursuit competition and became the first junior to win a senior title at Norwegian championships. After further appearances in the World Cup, in which he was mostly able to run under the top 30, and further victories in the Scandinavian Cup, he drove to the Junior World Championships in Kranj as a big favorite . There Northug managed to win all four titles to be awarded (sprint, 10 km classic, pursuit and relay). Although he was hailed as the new star in Norway due to the performances this season, it was not for the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin nominated. He proved that a nomination would have been justified at the World Cup competitions that took place after the Olympics. Northug, who had earned his participation in the World Cup as the leader in the Scandinavian Cup, achieved a top ten placement for the first time in seventh place in the sprint in Borlänge . A day later he prevailed against the entire world elite in Falun and won the pursuit competition as the youngest ever winner, ahead of the world cup leaders Tobias Angerer and Axel Teichmann . At the last World Cup competition in Sapporo, Japan, he climbed the podium again in second behind Mathias Fredriksson . He finished the season 14th in the overall World Cup and won the overall ranking of the Scandinavian Cup.
Northug has been a member of the Norwegian national team since the beginning of the 2006/07 season . After initial problems at the beginning of the season, he showed stable results among the top ten at the Tour de Ski, which was held for the first time , which secured him fourth place overall in the final classification. Even after the Tour de Ski, with two fifth places in Davos and Changchun , he showed that he can be expected at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 . In the team sprint, however, he reached only seventh place with Tor Arne Hetland , who fell in the final. In his favorite race, the pursuit competition, Northug was one of the top flight and he increased the pace shortly before the finish. However, he got caught unhappily with his sticks and skis, fell and in the end, deeply disappointed, only finished fifth. In the 15 kilometer freestyle competition, which was characterized by heavy snowfall in the group of the best runners, he was only 24th. In the relay competition, however, Northug once again showed his strengths in the final sprint and referred Yevgeny Dementjew and Anders Södergren to the den with a strong start Silver or bronze place. After winning his first world title, Northug also prevailed for the first time in Lahti in a World Cup sprint competition. At the end of the season he improved to seventh place in the overall World Cup. In the 2007/08 season Northug showed changeable performances. Although he improved his sprint skills and won the sprint in Asiago at the 2007/08 Tour de Ski, he often only achieved places around 30th place, especially in distance races. At the end of the season, he improved to 14th place in the Sprint World Cup and finished twelfth in the overall World Cup.
First individual world title and Olympic victory (since 2008)
Right at the beginning of the 2008/09 season , Northug proved that he had found his way back to his old strength in distance racing. In the first World Cup competition of the season in Gällivare over the distance of 15 kilometers freestyle, he finished on the podium for the first time in his career in a race with an interval start. Two weeks later he won the World Cup over the 30 kilometer freestyle (mass start) in La Clusaz . He also proved his good form at the Tour de Ski 2008/09 , in which he won the sprint in Nové Město na Moravě and was able to advance from fifth to second on the last stage. At the season highlight, the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec , Northug showed that he understands like no one else how to run in the slipstream in mass start competitions, in order to then show off his sprint strength in the final sprint. After hiding in the back field for a long time, he pulled away from the field together with Giorgio Di Centa , Alexander Legkow and Södergren in the decisive attack by Anders Södergren . On the last kilometer he increased the pace so much that the others could not follow him and he was able to confidently win his first individual world title ahead of Södergren and di Centa. As the final runner of the Norwegian team, Northug managed, as in the Tour de Ski, to run behind Axel Teichmann. In the final sprint, he clearly referred Teichmann and thus secured the Norwegian team the gold medal in the relay competition again. His third gold medal was won by Northug, who thus became the most successful athlete in the world championship, in the final competition over 50 km freestyle, where he won the sprint just ahead of the Russian runners Maxim Wylegschanin and Tobias Angerer. In the first competition after the World Championship, Northug proved that he would have had a chance of a medal in the sprint competition. In the freestyle sprint in Lahti , he fought a tough battle with sprint world champion Ola Vigen Hattestad and won his second World Cup race of the season. With a fifth place over 50 kilometers in the classic style in Trondheim , Northug took the lead in the overall ranking of the World Cup and went into the World Cup final as a big favorite . There, however, he lost decisive ground to Dario Cologna on the third stage and finished second in the overall World Cup with a clear gap of over 100 points. In the overall rankings of the Sprint and Distance World Cups, he also achieved the best positions of his career to date with fifth and third place. At the end of 2009 he won the election for Norway's Sportsman of the Year and the Aftenposten gold medal .
Northug dominated the 2009-10 season with a total of eight podium finishes, including five wins and three second places. He also won the second stage of the Tour de Ski and finished second in the overall standings behind Lukáš Bauer . He was also able to win a stage and the overall standings in the World Cup final . With a clear lead of 600 points, he won the overall World Cup standings with confidence and also secured overall victory in the distance standings and second place in the sprint standings. The 2010 Olympics in Vancouver , however, began for Northug in disappointment. Over the 15 kilometer freestyle, he fell far short of expectations and only finished 41st. But already in the sprint competition he found his strength back and won the bronze medal. In the pursuit competition he went into the race as the big favorite and was in the top group until shortly before the end of the race when he broke his stick one kilometer from the finish. Northug couldn't close the gap any more and had to be content with eleventh place. In the team sprint, Northug started together with Øystein Pettersen . Before the last change, the German Tim Tscharnke was able to clearly pull away and handed over to Axel Teichmann with a margin of 2.6 seconds . However, Northug managed to use his sprint strength again and overtake Teichmann shortly before the finish and thus win his first Olympic gold medal. In the relay competition, Northug secured the silver medal with his strengths in the final sprint of the Norwegian relay. Also in the last competition, the classic 50 kilometers (mass start), there was a duel between the German Axel Teichmann and Petter Northug. The German managed to break away from the top group on the last climb. Northug was able to reduce the deficit in the downhill again and, like a few days before, won the duel on the home straight against Teichmann and thus his second gold medal in the team sprint. In March 2010 he won the 44 km classic at the Flyktningerennet.
The 2010/11 season began poorly for the Norwegian. After poor performance in the preparatory race in Beitostølen , he did not participate in the first races of the season due to overload in training and only returned to the World Cup in Davos . There he took 12th place over 15 kilometers. In the sprint competition he survived the qualification, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals. After finishing third at the start and triumphing in the 20 km mass start, the Norwegian finished the Tour de Ski in second place, as in two years before.
At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 , he defended his world title in the pursuit and finished second in the sprint behind the Swede Marcus Hellner . He won another silver medal together with Ola Vigen Hattestad in the team sprint. With the Norwegian relay he also won the gold medal in the 4 x 10 km relay, although Northug, as the final runner, caused a negative highlight of the world championship: With a strong start, Northug managed to move away a few hundred meters from the finish to lower his rival in the leading group. After he realized on the home straight that no other runner could overtake him, he braked for the last few meters, turned his skis across, looked back at his pursuers and crossed the finish line shortly before them. His behavior is described by many media, but also by athletes and officials as unsporting and provocative. Particularly spicy: The Swedish relay won the silver medal, with Marcus Hellner - who narrowly beat Northug in the sprint competition - was the last runner. In the final 50 km marathon, Northug again won the gold medal and successfully defended his title from Liberec. As in 2009, Maxim Wylegschanin came second, who had to admit defeat to the Norwegian in the finish. With three gold and two silver medals, Northug became the most successful male athlete in the World Cup. In August 2011 he won gold in the 10 km mountain run and gold in the 24 km mass start race at the Rollerski World Championships in Aure .
At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he finished second in Sjusjøen over 15 km and first place with the relay. At the following Nordic Opening in Kuusamo he achieved first place in the 10 km individual race and in the overall standings. In the further course of the season he won two individual races and one race with the relay. He finished the Tour de Ski 2011/12 in third place overall. He achieved two stage wins and came second three times. At the end of the season he reached fifth place in the Distance World Cup and third place in the overall World Cup. In the 2012/13 season , as in the previous year, he took first place at the Nordic Opening and fourth place at the Tour de Ski 2012/13 . He also won four World Cups in the season, three of them in singles. In January 2013 he became the Norwegian skiathlon champion in Gaasbu . At the 2013 World Championships in Val di Fiemme , Northug won gold over 15 km of skating in the interval start and in the relay. He also won silver in the individual sprint. As the defending champion, he remained both fourth in the skiathlon and 21st over 50 km without a precious metal. Nevertheless, as in previous major events, he was able to maintain his status as the most successful male cross-country athlete. At the World Cup finals in Falun , he took first place in the overall standings and thus achieved third place in the distance world cup, second place in the sprint world cup and first place in the overall world cup.
After a weaker start to the 2013/14 season with 13th place at the Nordic Opening , he came in third place with the relay in Lillehammer and reached third place overall at the Tour de Ski 2013/14 . In December 2013 he won La Sgambeda . At the highlight of the season, the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi , tenth place in the sprint was his best place in the individual. In the skiathlon 16th and in the mass start race over 50 kilometers in the free technique, he finished 18th. In the team sprint and with the relay, he came in fourth place. He finished the season in ninth place in the Distance World Cup and sixth place in the overall World Cup. In the 2014/15 season he finished 15th at the Nordic Opening in Lillehammer and initially second behind Martin Johnsrud Sundby at the 2015 Tour de Ski . In July 2016, Sundby was stripped of this victory due to doping and Northug subsequently won his first Tour de Ski overall victory. In the sprint in Ruka and over 15 km in Davos , he took second place. In January 2015 he became Norwegian master in skiathlon. He won four gold medals at the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun . He became world champion in the sprint, over 50 km, with the relay and together with Finn Hågen Krogh in the team sprint. He was the first athlete to achieve five consecutive world championships with the cross-country relay. In the skiathlon he was eleventh and in the freestyle race over 15 kilometers he was 62nd. At the end of the season he reached eighth place in the Sprint World Cup, fifth place in the Distance World Cup and second place in the overall World Cup. In March 2015 he also won the 36 km freestyle at the Storlirennet ski marathon . At the end of 2015, Northug won Norway's Sportsman of the Year for the second time .
At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he took third place in the sprint stage of the Nordic Opening in Ruka , which he finished in second place overall. At the following World Cup in Lillehammer , he won the relay. He finished the 2016 Tour de Ski in fourth place. He came second in the 30 km mass start race and in the 15 km pursuit race in Lenzerheide . At the Norwegian championships in Tromsø , he won the skiathlon. In February 2016 he took third place at the Sprint World Cup in Stockholm and Lahti and won the sprint in Drammen . At the Ski Tour Canada , after six top ten placements, including two second places, he came third in the overall standings and reached eighth place in the Distance World Cup and second place in both the sprint and overall World Cup. In the 2016/17 season he only took part in six World Cup races. His best placement was fourth place in the sprint in Drammen. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti he finished eighth in the 50 km mass start race and fifth in the sprint. At the end of the season he won the Storlirennet over 36 km freestyle, the Fossavatn Ski Marathon over 50 km classic and the Flyktningerennet over 42 km classic. and finished second in the Ugra Ski Marathon over 50 km freestyle.
On December 12, 2018, Northug ended his active career.

Others
Northug belongs to the generation of the Norwegian cross-country skier who their training since its inclusion in the squad have systematically (pulse and load values as well track length etc. of every training). It turned out that he trained significantly more and with significantly lower intensity than the competition in Germany or other non-Scandinavian countries. While in Germany around a third of running training takes place above the anaerobic threshold, it was only 9% for these Norwegians.
Since the summer of 2007, Northug, who quickly attracted a lot of media interest in Norway, but quickly lost sympathy due to rash statements and his arrogant finishings, has been advising Bjørn Dæhlie on non-sports matters .
In July 2010 , Northug took part in the Main Event of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and finished 653rd out of 7,319 players. For this he received prize money of around US $ 20,000 . In mid-August 2010 he played on the European Poker Tour in Barcelona and cashed in at a side event of the No Limit Hold'em variant and at the main event .
On May 4, 2014, Northug caused a traffic accident with 1.65 per thousand alcohol in the blood. There was a high level of property damage and his passenger was injured. Following the accident, he claimed that it was not he but his passenger who drove. On October 9, 2014, he was sentenced to 50 days' imprisonment, a fine of NOK 185,000, and five years of driving license disqualification. In August 2020, he announced that he had been stopped by the police for excessive speed. This then found around 10 grams of cocaine at his home .
Northug's younger brothers Tomas , who won gold in the sprint and Norwegian relay at the 2010 Junior World Championships, and Even are cross-country skiers too.
