Valery Ivanovich Tarakanow ( Russian Валерий Иванович Тараканов ; born August 9, 1941 in Yaroslavl ) is a former Soviet cross-country skier .

Career

Tarakanow started internationally for the first time in February 1964 at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck . There he finished 17th over 15 km. In the same month he won the silver medal over 15 km and the gold medal with the relay at the Winter Universiade in Špindlerův Mlýn . He also won the gold medal with the relay at the 1966 Winter Universiade in Sestriere . Two years later, at the Winter Olympics in Grenoble , he came in 17th place over 30 km, ninth place over 15 km and fourth place with the relay. In 1968 and 1970 he won the Soviet championships over 30 km. In February 1970 he became world champion with the relay at the World Championships in Štrbské Pleso . He also achieved sixth place over 15 km there. At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , he came 16th over 15 km. In March 1972, he finished second in the 15 km run at the Lahti Ski Games .
