Nikolai Semjonowitsch Simjatow ( Russian: Николай Семёнович Зимятов ; born June 28, 1955 in Rumjanzewo, Moscow Oblast ) is a former Russian cross-country skier who started for the Soviet Union .

Career

Simjatow, who started for the Spartak Moscow , appeared internationally for the first time at the European Junior Championships in 1975 in Lieto . There he won the silver medal over 15 km. At the Lahti Ski Games in 1977 he was third with the relay. The following year he won the silver medal over 30 km at the World Championships in Lahti . He also achieved fifth place over 15 km and fourth place with the relay. In 1979 he finished second at the Svenska Skidspelen over 30 km and at the Lahti Ski Games over 15 km. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he won over 30 km, 50 km and the gold medal with the relay. In the race over 15 km he came in fourth place. In March 1982 he started the cross-country skiing world cup in Castelrotto for the first time and achieved 20th place over 15 km. In the 1982/83 season he came in the World Cup with four top ten placements on ninth place in the overall World Cup. In 1983 he triumphed in the Svenska Skidspelen with the relay. At the beginning of the 1983/84 season he won his first World Cup victory over 15 km in Reit im Winkl . At the season highlight, the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , he won the silver medal with the relay and the gold medal over 30 km. He also achieved 13th place over 50 km and sixth place over 15 km. In the same year he was awarded the Order of Friendship of Nations . He finished the World Cup season in sixth place in the overall World Cup. At the 1985 World Championships in Seefeld in Tirol , he achieved 17th place over 30 km, eighth place over 15 km and sixth place with the relay. He completed his last World Cup race in January 1988 in Kawgolowo , which he finished classically in 11th place over 30 km. In Soviet championships he won four times over 30 km (1978-1980, 1984), three times with the relay (1978, 1982, 1984) and once over 15 km (1979). After his career as a cross-country skier, he coached the Russian Olympic cross-country skiing team in 2002.
