Karlsson won the Wasalauf a total of nine times (1943, 1945 to 1951 and 1953), seven of them in a row, making it the record winner. At Swedish championships he won six times over 15 km (1944, 1945, 1947, 1950, 1951, 1953), five times over 30 km (1943, 1944, 1946, 1949, 1950) and six times over 50 km (1943-1945, 1948, 1950, 1951). After finishing his active career, Nils Karlsson worked for 17 years in the organization of the Vasa race as head of the track and chairman.

Karlsson took part in 256 ski races in his career, of which he finished only ten with a result worse than sixth place.
