Holmenkollen Medal
The Holmenkollen Medal is the highest Norwegian award in skiing . It has been awarded since 1895 to athletes who have performed excellently in international competitions (especially those at Holmenkollen in Oslo ).
In most cases, Nordic skiers are honored (cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, and since 2011 also biathlon). Since alpine ski races are rarely held on Holmenkollen, only seven alpine skiers have received a medal. Four members of the Norwegian royal family have also been honored so far.
Most of the winners come from Norway (116). Athletes from Finland (17), Germany (11, including 3 from the GDR), Sweden (10), Russia (8, including 3 from the USSR), Austria (5), Japan (4) and Italy also received a medal (2), Switzerland (2), Poland (2), France (2), Kazakhstan (1), Estonia (1), Belarus (1). Each athlete can only receive the medal once, up to now 135 men and 26 women.
