At the Norwegian Championships in Oslo in 1953 , he won the bronze medal in singles behind Simon Slåttvik and Per Gjelten . A year later at the Norwegian Championships in Strinda in 1954 , he only had to admit defeat to Sverre Stenersen and won the silver medal. In the same year Gundersen won the silver medal in the Nordic Combined at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1954 .

At the Lahti Ski Games in 1955 he won bronze in the combined competition. He had already succeeded in doing this in 1954. At the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , he reached 11th place in the individual competition of the combination. A short time later he reached the bronze medal behind Tormod Knutsen and Arne Larsen at the Norwegian Championships in Mjøndalen . A year later at his last Norwegian Championships in Rælingen in 1961 , he won his first and only national title.

In his career he also took part in the Four Hills Tournament as a ski jumper .

After his active career, Gundersen became known primarily through the introduction of the so-called Gundersen method , a special start mode in Nordic combined, which was introduced in 1985.
