Sverre Stenersen (born June 18, 1926 in Målselv ; † December 17, 2005 ibid) was a Norwegian skier who was successful in the Nordic combined as well as in its individual disciplines ski jumping and cross-country skiing .

Career

Stenersen celebrated his first success at the Norwegian Championships in Narvik in 1951 , where he won the bronze medal in the individual Nordic Combined behind Simon Slåttvik and Kjetil Maardalen .

At the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 , which were also rated as the Nordic World Ski Championships , Stenersen started in cross-country skiing and in combination. After he did not get beyond the 27th place in the individual over 18 km, he won the bronze medal in the individual combination behind his compatriot Simon Slåttvik and the Finn Heikki Hasu . He was still in second place after ski jumping, but could only reach ninth place in cross-country skiing. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 1954 , he surprisingly won his first world title. In the same year he also celebrated his first victory at the Norwegian Championships, which he was able to defend five times by 1958.

In Cortina d'Ampezzo he was able to win his first and only Olympic gold in combination at the 1956 Winter Olympics and thus defended his world championship title from 1954. He also started in the special jumpers for the first time and jumped from the normal hill to 35th place in the individual. Two years later, at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 , he won the silver medal again behind Paavo Korhonen .

As early as 1955, one year after his world championship title, Stenersen was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal .
