Simon Kaurin Slåttvik (born May 24, 1917 in Valnesfjord , Norrland , † May 5, 2001 in Lillehammer ) was a Norwegian skier. In 1952 he was Olympic champion in the individual Nordic combined competition .

Career

Slåttvik began his sports career at the age of 15 in regional competitions of the Workers' Sports Association ( Norwegian Arbeidernes Idrettsforbund ). In 1939 he won the AIF championship. He later moved with his family to Mo i Rana , where he competed in Nordic combined and cross-country skiing for the IL Stålkameratene . by winning the Norwegian championship title at the Norwegian Championships in Tistedalen in 1947, ahead of Olaf Dufseth and Eldar Hagen . In 1948 he won the combination competition on Holmenkollen for the first time.

At the Norwegian Championships in Steinkjer in 1949 Slåttvik won his second national title ahead of Per Gjelten and Gunder Gundersen . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lake Placid in 1950 , he won the bronze medal in the same discipline behind Heikki Hasu and his compatriot Ottmar Gjermundshaug . A short time later Slåttvik missed his third national title at the Norwegian Championships in Asker in 1950 and was only third in the end. For this he achieved the second victory after 1948 at Holmenkollen. In 1951 he was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal . In the same year he also won the Holmenkollen combination race for the third time.

At the Olympic Games in Oslo in 1952 , Slåttvik was one of the favorites in Nordic combined despite his 34 years of age. Surprisingly, he fell in the first jump and was after this on rank 21. After two more top jumps he was finally able to win the jumping just ahead of Heikki Hasu. With third place in the cross-country skiing part, he finally secured the Olympic victory. In the cross-country skiing individual over 18 km, Slåttvik reached 15th place.

At the Norwegian Championships in Oslo in 1953 , he managed to win his fourth and last national title. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1954 in Falun , he again reached fifth place in the individual combination.

Slåttvik continued to compete well beyond the age of 40. He was also the first Nordic combined athlete ever to jump over 100 meters. After the end of his career he ran a kiosk in Lillehammer , where he died in 2001 at the age of 83.

Private

Slåttvik was married and has two sons. One of them bears the name Heikki in memory of his competitor and friend Heikki Hasu .
