He graduated from the ski boarding school in Furtwangen and then studied medical engineering at the Furtwangen University branch in Villingen-Schwenningen . He then did his doctorate in the field of sports motor skills at the Institute for Sports and Sports Science at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg with a thesis on balance control. Today he works for the prosthesis manufacturer Aesculap. He lives in Freiburg with his wife Birgit and two sons.
