Jens Gaiser (born August 15, 1978 in Baiersbronn ) is a former German Nordic combined athlete .

Career

Gaiser, who started for SV Mitteltal-Obertal , made his international debut at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1997 in Canmore . There he won the silver medal in the team competition together with Georg Hettich and Ronny Ackermann . Ten days later he was part of the team for the 1997 Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim . He reached sixth place in the team competition. A year later on March 14, 1998 Gaiser made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup in Oslo . Right away he was able to run and jump into the top 20 with rank 13 and thus also well into the points. Despite this success, he was not part of the senior squad for the 1998/99 season either. It was not until January 1999 that he started again in the World Cup in Schonach in the Black Forest and once again reached the points in 15th place.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1999 in Ramsau am Dachstein , Gaiser reached 31st place in the sprint and again reached sixth place with the team. After he missed the points twice at the beginning of the 1999/2000 season in Vuokatti , he temporarily went to the B World Cup, where he was able to win his first competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . He was also on the podium twice in Calgary . Then he went back to the World Cup. It took him until mid-March until he landed in the points again in Oslo. At the Summer Grand Prix he achieved two clear points in Klingenthal and Oberhof and finished the Grand Prix in eighth place.

From January 2001 Gaiser got a permanent place in the World Cup squad. In the third competition in Reit im Winkl he landed in the points again. As a result, he consistently achieved points. In December 2001 he achieved the best individual result of his career with fourth place in Lillehammer . Only in team World Cups did he get better placements, for example in January 2002 in Val di Fiemme , where he and his teammates took third place.

At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , he took 19th place in the sprint competition. In the 2002/03 season started Gaiser with a good sixth in Kuusamo . However, he did not manage to build on this result during the season. Once he even missed the points in Oberhof.

At the 2003 Summer Grand Prix he was among the top ten four times. Among them he also managed a victory in Steinbach-Hallenberg . Even in the 2003/04 season he did not make it to the top of the world in the individual World Cups. Only with the team did he again achieve a podium in second place in Oberstdorf . In the same year he started twice as a ski jumper in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup .

With the 2005/06 season , Gaiser had the best season of his career. Despite still mixed results, he achieved the best result in the overall World Cup as well as in the Sprint World Cup.

As the final runner of the German relay at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he won the silver medal together with Björn Kircheisen , Georg Hettich and Ronny Ackermann .

For this achievement he received the Silver Laurel Leaf on April 26, 2006.

In January 2007, he announced his retirement from competitive sports because of the missed qualification for the World Cup. He had previously won two competitions in Chaux-Neuve in the B World Cup .

After the end of his career, Gaiser completed his training as a chimney sweep. He also took over the cross-country training for young people and the training of the football Bambini team at SV Mitteltal-Obertal.

Gaiser is married and has one son.
